Section of Evergreen Lake North Trail fixed after collapse

Workers have fixed a portion of the Evergreen Lake North Trail that collapsed earlier this week.

EPRD Executive Director Cory Vander Veen said workers from EPRD and the Evergreen Metro District have shored up the area with a temporary repair. A beam was driven back into the ground, a cable system installed and a section of railing welded together.

The collapse comes as EPRD last month rejected the one bid it received to rebuild the North Trail because the bid was substantially higher than the $4.5 million in grants the district has to pay for construction. Officials are talking with construction companies that didn’t bid on the project to find out why, hoping to refine the project’s scope and rebid the project soon to be more successful.

Initial conversations with construction companies showed the timeline to get the work done — which the board had hoped would start in September — was impossible, which seems to be a factor in the lack of bids, Vander Veen previously said. Some companies have projects scheduled out a year.

The new North Trail will be a 10-foot-wide concrete walkway along Evergreen Parkway and a soft-surface trail at the lakeshore. The trail was built in 1987, and in 2016, a portion of the trail collapsed, closing it for 19 months. EPRD staff managed to shore up the supports under the trail to reopen it.
