Alyona Shchennikova, who hails from Evergreen and trains in Wheat Ridge, hopes to make the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. Gymnastics is something that’s always been a part of her. Some may say it’s in her blood.

“Gymnastics kind of runs in my family,” she said. “Both of my parents were gymnasts, and on my dad’s side, his parents were gymnasts, so I was always in the gym since I was like a baby.”

Her older sister, Polina, also competes in the sport and has been an inspiration for the 16-year-old throughout her career.

EVERGREEN — The Class 4A Jeffco League boys basketball title is heading back to Golden after the Demons, No. 3 seed, won the conference title outright Thursday with a 58-48 road victory against No. 8-seeded Evergreen.

“Obviously, we didn’t play as well as we would have liked,” Evergreen coach Scott Haebe said. “We just seemed a step slow defensively, and we really never got into a rhythm offensively.”

CONIFER — The Conifer boys basketball team could have packed it in after its horrendous start: The Lobos lost eight of their first nine games and entered the 2018 calendar year having lost seven straight.

But through it all, the team never gave into the losing, and it paid off. Conifer (12-11, 8-2) can call itself conference champions after beating Alameda 65-49 on Feb. 14, capping a turnaround that will continue in the Class 4A state tournament.

  • Lobos wrestler Condit breaking...

ENGLEWOOD — Cayden Condit walked off the mat and fell into the embrace of her older brother, Zander, as the two shared a hug.
This wasn’t just a simple show of support between a brother and sister. It was a teammate, a fellow wrestler recognizing the work that has been put in since Cayden was 6 years old.
“It’s just amazing to see her succeed. It’s well-deserved,” said Zander Condit, a Conifer High School sophomore, and 132-pounder.
