  • Debut defeat doesn’t diminish...

    DENVER — While his first professional mixed martial arts fight may have only lasted 1 minute, 37 seconds, Matt Davis is in it for the long haul.
    Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, has been a growing sport of over the last couple of years, and Davis, a resident of Evergreen, is a newcomer to the scene. His first fight on Aug. 17 at the Red Lion Hotel was against Jon Vigil, who was also debuting for the Kick Down Mixed Martial Arts Association.

    2011 recap: It was just about the perfect season for Evergreen, which won the Jeffco League and 4A state championships. “Coming into league we were excited because Elizabeth was going and so were we and we won, which was a huge accomplishment for us and gave us a big boost going into state, which we also won,” Bello said. Evergreen had  10 individuals qualify for final events with six of them placing.

  • Cougars keep even keel, win...

    ARVADA — It was only the first hole, but Sam Theil didn’t do himself any favors. The Evergreen senior co-captain, starting on No. 18 at the Jefferson Academy Invitational on Aug. 16, fired a double bogey. It was a tough start for a player who struggles more with golf’s mental game than with the physical side.

  • Berggren has passion for game of...

    It’s not like Julia Berggren, then 6 years old, didn’t like gymnastics. She loved it. So did her brother, Victor. For their parents, Erik and Karin, both avid outdoor athletes in their native Sweden, it wasn’t their cup of tea. So they encouraged, or as Erik would say tricked, them into trying other sports for a couple of months just to see if they’d like something else.

    2011 recap: Last season was close but no cigar for the Cougars. Three times at regionals Evergreen forced a playback match to qualify for the 4A state tournament. And three times it lost. In five of seven draws the Cougars settled for third place. That’s where the team finished as well with 29 points, falling behind Colorado Academy and Alexander Dawson.

  • Deer Creek Challenge ride...

    Race director Pat Downing, in an e-mail sent to participants last week, announced that the Deer Creek Challenge bicycle ride, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 19, has been canceled because of low registration numbers.

  • Migrating nighthawks fill the...

    There is a small order of birds known as goatsuckers. The scientific name is the Caprimulgiformes, which comes from the Latin Caprimulgus, a milker of goats and forma or form.

  • Crippler lives up to its name

    Few have shed the blood, sweat and tears required to claim a Rocky Mountain Cycling Club (RMCC) Triple Crown title to their list of achievements, but on Aug. 11 five people did just that when they finished the inaugural Cripple Creek Crippler Bike Race, bringing the total number of 2012 Triple Crown achievers to 16.
