  • Mirada named best art gallery in Denver area

    Mirada Fine Art in Indian Hills has been named the best art gallery in the Denver area as part of the 2016 Denver A-List awards. Five years after it was a finalist for the award, the gallery bested more than 100 other galleries from across the state, including the Space Gallery and Robischon Gallery in Denver.

    According to co-owner Steve Sonnen, the honor is a validation of the gallery’s efforts since it opened in 2009.

  • Sculpture competition focuses kids' artistic skills

    Some young Evergreen students proved they have solid artistic skills Friday night at a Sculpture Evergreen art contest reception at Evergreen National Bank.

    Students at Marshdale and Wilmot elementary schools and Evergreen Middle School participated in the contest, in which students used one of Evergreen’s many sculptures as inspiration for their own artwork.

    This is the first time Sculpture Evergreen has held a contest for elementary and middle school students, according to Jane Stewart, the contest organizer.

  • Animals are people too

    StageDoor Theatre is bringing the search for the Great Pink Sea Snail to the stage with a production of “Dr. Dolittle, Jr.,” which will be performed by the middle school company May 6, 7, 13 and 14.

    Director Mike Kinnie has been a fan of the original movie and its soundtrack since childhood.

    “The story has a nice message: take care of the animals, don’t forget about the animals, animals are people too. So it’s a great story; it’s a great message.”

  • 'Legally Blonde' features laughs, songs at Clear Creek High

    Elle Woods has come to Clear Creek High School.

    Elle — portrayed by senior Emily Gerding — will star in “Legally Blonde the Musical” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The musical follows the plot of the 2001 movie, only with random outbursts of song, as Rachel Smith, the show’s director, put it.

    Smith, a CCHS English teacher, said Gerding is “channeling her inner Elle. She has put in a lot of work to make (Elle) a fun, likable character.”

  • Evergreen natives in cover band that targets fans of The Who

    Two Evergreen natives and longtime friends will perform Friday at the Little Bear in a five-piece band that covers the music of The Who.

    Pete Ward, founder of The Substitutes, and David Floyd met in Evergreen in 1974, when they were neighbors and rode the bus together to Bergen Elementary. From good times spent summer camping to winter sledding, music was always a part of their friendship.

  • Talent takes the stage to raise funds for Operation Homefront

    Evergreen’s most talented residents were greeted with applause — and donations — as part of the fourth annual Evergreen’s Got Talent on Saturday night at The Wild Game.

    The talent show is a fund-raiser for Operation Homefront, an organization that provides assistance to military families and wounded veterans in need. The organization has an office in Colorado Springs.

  • Young artists exhibit creativity, enthusiasm

    As Parmalee Elementary third-grader Riley Sullivan walked into Shadow Mountain Gallery in downtown Evergreen on Friday afternoon, she silently pointed to an art display.

    Her piece, a tinfoil bug with five legs, was hanging in the gallery as part of the annual Elementary Artists 2016 show. The show featured the work of young artists from Bergen Meadow, Carlson, King-Murphy, Montessori School of Evergreen, Parmalee and Wilmot.

    The Evergreen Chorale’s production of “Guys & Dolls” — in addition to having great music and a comedic plot — has some special elements.

    First, Pat Payne is back directing his second show for the Chorale. Payne is well known in the Denver area theater scene, most recently at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities.

    Second, the cast is a 50/50 mix of Evergreen Chorale regulars from the area and those coming up the hill to be part of the production.
