EVERGREEN — Sometimes, happy accidents work out for the best.

On a muggy Sunday morning at Evergreen Lake, 300 participants from around the state and across the country competed in the local Sprint Triathlon.

One couple from Sartell, Minn., came out to visit their daughter and planned to compete in the Mount Evans Hill Climb the day before, but couldn’t participate in the arduous climb. In a last-minute decision, Darryl and Pam Stevens elected to participate in the Evergreen triathlon and, lo and behold, the two won in their respective age groups.
