Popular destination for school field trips closes

Luke’s Farm — the place with a tepee on Ruby Ranch Road — has closed its doors after 18 years in business.

Thousands of schoolchildren have visited the 10-acre “farm” over the years to play on the playground equipment, pet the animals, and enjoy outdoor activities, said Minetta Bishard, who owns the property and runs the business with husband Doug. The property at 30433 Ruby Ranch Road, with horses, the playground, a chuckwagon and a John Deere tractor, is named after the Bishards’ now 26-year-old son, Luke.

Minetta Bishard says she and her husband are ready to move to a second home in Florida because of her health issues related to two hip replacement surgeries in recent years, along with a left knee replacement and a left shoulder replacement.

The family is looking to sell the home Doug Bishard built, the barn and the business for about $1.2 million. Minetta Bishard said it’s hard to leave Evergreen after all the years of support from the community, but it’s time.

“I need to pass the torch to someone who could breathe some new life into this — the legacy of Luke’s Farm,” Bishard said. “The cold has really affected me, and I have arthritis through my body.”

Preschoolers from John and Karen Litz Preschool Center in Golden went to a Harvest Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 23 and 24 — the last days the farm was open. It was “bittersweet” to visit the outdoor venue for a second year and find out that it was closing, said Bernadette Marquez, the preschool director.

“It was a great experience that we went there. We definitely wanted to make the trip next year and make it part of our (fall and harvest) theme,” Marquez said.
