Landlords looking to turn office space into residential units

A few building owners in Evergreen are taking the initial steps to turn a surplus of commercial office space into marketable residential units. 

The commercial office space vacancy rate was about 30 percent from 2008 to 2015, when it dropped to about 19 percent, said Bill Downes, a commercial real estate broker in Conifer. The commercial market is affected by overbuilding as well as a shift in how business is done, allowing a lot of people to work from home, Downes said.
