DENVER — The Evergreen girls basketball team is officially the best team in the state of Colorado in Class 4A. Again.

On Saturday afternoon at the Denver Coliseum, the sixth-seeded Cougars, in a rematch of last year’s 4A title game against Pueblo South, repeated last year’s fortunes with a 46-38 victory over the No. 12 Colts. It’s Evergreen's second straight title in its third consecutive appearance in the championship game.

Junior forward Claudia Dillon and senior guard Meriel Hahn led the Cougars (26-2) with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Pueblo South's Drea Nelson netted 14.

The Cougars, who finished the season on a 10-game winning streak, got off to a strong start, taking an early 7-0 lead, and they never relinquished that cushion. After going up 10 points midway through the first quarter, the Cougars led 25-18 at the half.

But the Colts (18-10) weren't ready to roll over just yet.

With 4 minutes, 50 seconds left in the game, the Colts stormed back, pulling within four points to 34-30. Thanks to a few missed Pueblo South free throws, however, Evergreen was able to hold on to that lead and worked its way up to a double-digit advantage again.
