ARVADA — Evergreen golf has been rolling this season, and Friday’s Jeffco meet at the Indian Tree Golf Club was no different.

With an overall score of 317, the Cougars placed first in the 4A competition, led by senior Nolan Miller and junior Clayton Whitton, who both shot a 78 on a par-70 course and tied for third in 4A.

The course conditions, Whitton said, weren’t the best, and that contributed to a few of the Cougars’ struggles.

“It was super soft today,” Whitton said. “The putts were not dropping. I would say the greens were not in very good condition, but other than that, the course was in super good condition. I think I can speak for the whole team that we should have gotten a little bit lower than we did. We’re looking to get after it in the next tournament.”

Behind the top two, Ben Newkirk shot an 80 (seventh), followed by Justin Sneed with an 81 (ninth) and Jack Mitchell, who had an 83 (13th). As a team, the Cougars beat the second-place Demons by 12 strokes.

Aside from Miller and Whitton, the Cougars are still working on solidifying their last couple members of the top four as regionals and state fast approach. Luckily, they have a solid team behind them and plenty of talent to choose from when the time comes.

“There’s definitely a lot of guys stepping up to the plate and playing good golf right now, so that’s good to see,” Whitton said. “Right now, we’re just kind of trying to get control of things and make sure we’re playing the best golf possible at the time when regionals and state comes around.”
