An Alice man suspected of shooting at someone in the El Rancho area last March has had his arraignment continued to September.

Matthew Gaten, 31, was scheduled for an arraignment on Aug. 13, but it was continued to 1 p.m. Sept. 27. He will be able to enter a plea at that time.

Gaten was arrested March 22 after he allegedly shot an Evergreen man in the 29000 block of Hotel Way. He has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, second-degree assault and four other counts. He’s been charged with a bias-motivated crime for allegedly using a racial slur.

Gaten made bond, which was set at $125,000.

According to the arrest affidavit, around 10 p.m. on March 22, Gaten allegedly got into a disagreement with a man and the man’s girlfriend about a vehicle they were storing for him. There were reportedly previous confrontations among the three before the March 22 incident.

Gaten allegedly fired one shot that hit the victim’s leg before he fled to Idaho Springs. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

When questioned, Gaten said the victim charged at him with a knife.
