Man reportedly shot stepmother, father before turning gun on himself

By Daniel Laverty

Details of the fatal shooting on the night of Jan. 20 in Indian Hills indicate a man shot his father and stepmother, then turned the gun on himself.

The Jeffco Sheriff's Office has reported that Robert Leiman, 25, shot Margaret Leiman, 53, and Bruce Leiman, 58, after the three were involved in an argument inside the home in the 23000 block of Pawnee Road.

Margaret Leiman was pronounced dead at the scene, and a coroner’s report confirmed that Robert Leiman died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot. Bruce Leiman remained at Swedish Hospital in stable condition.

Deputies responded to the home at 10:05 p.m. Jan. 20 after receiving a 911 call from Sarah McConaghie, 24. McConaghie stayed hidden in a bedroom closet, on the phone with dispatchers, until deputies arrived.

According to a Jeffco sheriff’s news release, Robert Leiman was involved in an argument with his parents — Margaret was Robert’s stepmother and McConaghie’s biological mother. Robert Leiman went to his room and returned with a handgun, shooting his parents multiple times, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s report also indicates that Robert Leiman fired several shots into the room where McConaghie was hiding before turning the gun on himself. The handgun reportedly belonged to Robert Leiman.

Jeffco sheriff’s spokesman Mark Techmeyer said the investigation is ongoing.

The Jeffco crime lab and 10 investigators were at the scene. Jeffco sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said investigators had executed a search warrant for the home and vehicles.
