A brush fire in the Hi Meadow burn scar area near Pine is 100 percent contained after burning nearly 3 acres on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Cochise Fire, which was first reported at 2 p.m. Wednesday, was started by a lightning strike in the 15000 block of Quandary Peak Trail, just south of County Road 126. Firefighters from the Elk Creek, Platte Canyon and North Fork fire departments, as well as the U.S. Forest Service, responded with 18 firefighters on the fire line.

According to Jacob Ware, deputy fire chief for Elk Creek, weather conditions hampered efforts to contain the fire Wednesday night when responders had to leave after about four hours due to lightning in the area. Firefighters returned to the burn area Thursday morning before containing it by 6 p.m.

The Hi Meadow Fire, a human-caused wildfire, burned nearly 12,000 acres in the area between Pine and Bailey in June 2000.
