An armed man who barricaded himself in a home in the 12500 block of southbound U.S. 285 on Monday evening was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the house Tuesday morning, ending a 16-hour standoff with the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office.

According to Mark Techmeyer, spokesman for the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office, a 76-year old man called 911 at 6:45 p.m. Monday night to report that his 37-year old son had taken him and his wife — who was also the mother of the suspect — hostage in their home. While the man escaped, his wife was held hostage before being safely removed from the home at 11:30 p.m., per a tweet from the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office.

The standoff situation led law enforcement to order Conifer residents living near the intersection of Kings Valley Road and southbound U.S. 285 to shelter in place until Tuesday morning while a SWAT team worked to end the situation safely. Neighborhood road closures were lifted just before 10 a.m. with the Sheriff’s Office declaring the standoff over at noon.

According to press release from the Jeffco Sheriff's Office Tuesday afternoon, "both victims were unharmed during Monday night's incident. However, the suspect's father sustained non-life threatening injuries when assaulted by his son two days prior."

The suspect's identity is currently being withheld pending positive identification by the Jeffco Coroner's Office.

No further information about the situation or the suspect was available at press time.
