  • Cougars end season with win

    LAKEWOOD — Trent Butler couldn’t help but stop what he was saying and laugh.

    Running across the turf at Trailblazer Stadium following Evergreen’s season-ending victory over Ridge View Academy was head coach Mike Sellers. In hot pursuit was senior Brandon Gustafson, armed with a cooler of ice water.

    “I think it could have gone a lot better, but for the most part, a win is a win, and that’s how you want to go out,” Butler said before stopping to watch Gustafson finally hit his target. “Obviously, everyone is having fun.”

  • Predators playing with pride

    Dale Nicholls has been around the game of football a long time.

    In his 30-plus years as a coach, he’s never experienced a season quite like this.

    With only 11 players at his disposal, Nicholls, coach of the Mountain Area Midget Football Association’s Division I eighth-grade Predators team, has to be creative just to get through a typical practice.

  • Finishing in style

    FORT COLLINS — In his final race at Evergreen, Ryan Haebe wanted to leave everything out on the course.

    That’s exactly what the senior did Oct. 25 at the Colorado High School Activities Association’s State Cross-County Championships at Fossil Ridge High School, and he was rewarded with a top-10 finish and was just four seconds shy of breaking the school record.

    Haebe, sporting a new closely-cropped haircut, finished the very flat course in 15 minutes, 51.67 seconds.

  • Cougars show grit in loss

    LAKEWOOD — It’s a hard days work to be a spoiler in football.

    The Cougars showed they had enough grit and skill to fit the part against Summit had they just shown up on time.

    A rough first quarter dug a hole the Cougars could never quite escape as they harassed the Tigers to the end of a 42-26 Class 3A Metro League defeat Oct. 24 at Trailblazer Stadium.

  • Evergreen dominates

    The Cougars are coming off arguably their best game of the season, just in time for the most important part of their season.

    Evergreen routed Summit in three games Oct. 16 to finish the volleyball regular season on a three-match win streak. Next up is a re-aligned district tournament this weekend that will pit the Cougars against some tough competition and a familiar face – Conifer.

  • Tennis team ready to reach next...

    Adrian Games had given his tennis players a single mission heading into this season:

    Play your best at regionals.

    The Cougars did that, and then some.

    In fact, the team’s strong play started a few weeks before regionals. Games knew following a close 4-3 loss to D’Evelyn in a Class 4A Jefferson County League dual match, that his team was ready to compete against the state’s top players.

  • Cougars best rival, prepare for...

    Becca Motte has experienced both sides of the Evergreen-Conifer rivalry.

    She played for the Lobos as a freshman and sophomore before transferring over to Evergreen prior to her junior year.

    Last year, the Lobos defeated Motte and the Cougars. When the two teams met again on Sept. 30, Motte was bound and determined not to let that happen again.

  • On their marks

    Ryan and Bryn Haebe were seemingly built for anything that requires endurance.

    At a young age, the brother-and-sister would frequently take the mountains, either on mountain bikes or by foot.

    Their dad, Evergreen softball and boys basketball coach, Scott Haebe, noticed something peculiar during those family outings.

    LAKEWOOD — The best advice I heard in the aftermath of Evergreen’s epic loss to D’Evelyn was that the Cougars should just forget about it, wipe it away and move on.

  • Haebe best in show again

    LITTLETON — It’s rare to see a close finish at a cross-country meet. But at the Dave Sanders Memorial Invitational on Sept. 26, the finish was as close as it gets for the Division II boys.

    Ryan Haebe of Evergreen had to sprint to the finish to hold off Roblet Muhudin of Overland as spectators cheered the last hundred meters. Haebe, who won the Conifer Invitational the Cougar 5k Stride as well this past week, finished with a time 15 minutes, 50 seconds, just three seconds ahead of Muhudin.
