Lady Cougars repeat as Boulder Creekside Classic champions
    — Sarah Kay and Morgan Milstead each homered and Evergreen pounded out 12 hits in a 7-2 win over host Boulder to win the second annual Boulder Creekside Classic on Sept. 1.
Sydney Stansbury, Kenzie Skold, Natalia Aramovich and Milstead each had two hits in the title game.
Ragan Wickham pitched a complete-game three-hitter for the victory. She walked two and struck out two.

  • Evergreen shows youth, lack of...

WESTMINSTER — In the first regular-season gymnastics meet of the season, Chatfield, Evergreen and host Standley Lake faced off Aug. 30. The home gym advantage seemed to prove the added edge for Standley Lake, which took first place with 172.275 points. Chatfield was second with 165.975, and Evergreen placed third with 158.725 points.
The competition was tough, especially for Evergreen, which has a largely young team that lacks depth.

  • Cougars find their groove in the...

It wasn’t your typical Evergreen Cougars game. Now that’s to be expected in the season opener against an opponent the likes of Air Academy. After all, both teams reached at least the 4A state quarterfinals in 2011. Shoot, Evergreen played for the championship.
But the Aug. 30 game at Evergreen High School showed Cougars head coach Peter Jeans that his team needs to play as one. It took a while, but Evergreen finally figured that out.

  • Leafy spurge weeds can grow in...

It’s beginning to look a lot like autumn, I’m unhappy to say. Seldom does autumn come this early, but the drought seems to have made plants mature early, and many of the late summer and autumn flowers are blooming or past blooming already.

  • The Will to Win: Teams look for...

It’s a feeling that never gets old. Be it the first time or last year’s fifth championship since 1999, the joy of winning a state football title is sheer euphoria for Andy Lowry. It always bring an infectious smile.
The Columbine head coach has a pretty good handle on what it takes to be successful. He’s seen it quite a bit over the years.

  • Slow-starting Cougars right ship...

KEENESBURG — Rob Molholm was expecting the growing pains. After all, how could there not be with his Evergreen Cougars replacing 19 starters — 21 if you include the place-kicker and punter — from last season’s 9-2 3A state playoff team.
And there was plenty for the Evergreen head coach not to like in the season opener Aug. 25 at Weld Central.
Such as the Cougars’ four turnovers — two of which came in the game’s first 2 minutes, 5 seconds.

Dakota Ridge, coming off of a year in which it went 20-3, shared the 5A Jeffco League title, won a  regional title, and advanced to the 5A Elite 8, was back at it Aug. 25, beating visiting Evergreen 15-1 at Dave Atencio Field.
The loss dropped Evergreen, coming off a 17-7 season and a spot in the 4A state quarterfinals, to 1-1.
