  • Christmas Bird Count a gift to...

    Next Sunday, Dec. 17, the Evergreen Naturalists will hold their Christmas Bird Count. This annual project is sponsored by the National Audubon Society and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with bird clubs across the country participating.

  • Cougars clip Lobos at finish line

    If you’ve ever wanted to know what life was like for the Beatles, just stick around for the next Evergreen and Conifer girls swim meet.

    “You get 60 to 70 girls together and it’s pretty loud,” Cougars coach Jeanne Godaire said.

    The usual din was raised to a deafening roar Dec. 11 when the teams entered the final event with Conifer leading by two points. The Cougars responded by placing first and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay to defeat the Lobos 92-88 at the Evergreen Recreation Center.

  • Evergreen pins down Englewood in...

    Colby Fisher let the Englewood Pirates know exactly how they were going to be treated on Dec. 11.

    The Evergreen 135-pound wrestler trailed nearly the entire match before he discovered a burst of reserve energy to score a four-point move at the end of regulation. Fisher attacked in overtime, scoring a quick takedown for an 8-6 decision.

    No matter what the Pirates did in their Class 4A Jefferson County League dual, the Cougars found the right counter and enough gas in the tank to do it.

  • Exclusive: Sellers steps down...

    Evergreen is in the market for a new football coach.

    Mike Sellers, who manned the position for the past six years, recently announced he was stepping down from his post as he looks to return to school to pursue completion of a master's degree in education.

    "I've been involved with football since I was eight-years-old," said Sellers, who also cited spending more time with his family as a factor in his decision. "It's hard to walk away but I thought this was the best time to do it."

    People frequently ask me how I became so interested in the outdoors. I was fortunate in having an amazing mother who encouraged all of us to follow our interests. She and I had an especially close rapport, since she had been a biology teacher.

    Many people have asked recently about a little brown mottled bird with a white breast and a curved beak that they have seen circling around the trunks of their trees. The bird is a brown creeper, a fairly common resident in our woodlands. Why they have become so obvious recently probably has several causes.
