  • Column: Look here, fall sports...

Have you looked around a bit lately? No? Than take a peek. Go by the nearest high school or golf course. Chances are you’ll see a golfer, a football player or a runner cross your path. It is August after all.
You know what that means? With school on the horizon — hard to believe, I know — high school athletics are here again, too.
It seems as if the summer just flew by. In a lot of ways, it did. I blinked and seemingly missed it. And though it’s still a wee bit warm out there, for me at least, there’s no better time of the year.

  • Szuch family shines in Evergreen...

    For the Courier
Aug. 4 was a great day in the lives of the Szuch family of Evergreen.
Caroline Szuch, 40, was the master’s female overall winner in the 5k portion of  the Evergreen Town Race which supports the Alpine Rescue Team.  She crossed the finish line near Evergreen Lake in 19 minutes, 26 seconds.
Nearly one minute earlier, 11-year-old Colin Szuch dominated the U-12 male division with a time of 18:19. Alayna Szuch, 9, took the U-12 female division in 19:49.

  • Stingers extend helping hand to...

It’s been four years since Zac Crawford came on board with the Stingers Soccer Club, and it’s always been a goal of his to grow the program into the surrounding communities outside of Evergreen. He was just waiting for the right person to come along.
That’s where Mark Friederich comes in.
Wanting to build soccer up the 285 Corridor, the Conifer High School assistant boys and girls soccer coach answered Crawford’s call to bring a youth program to the community in what Friederich hopes will become a feeder program for the Lobos.

  • Cencich leaves mark with bench...

Thomas Cencich said he backed off a little bit. After all, the 52-year-old Littleton resident only had a deadlift of 429 pounds. He also took it easy with his squat of 446 pounds. Normally that’s where he would start, but he wanted to make the judges happy.
“I’m going really easy, really light to get something on the board,” the 1978 Evergreen High School graduate said.
Well, he was at Disney World after all. There were other things to do.

  • Townsend’s solitaires are...

I always associate the Townsend’s solitaire, Myadestes townsendi, with working in the garden. For many years, a pair of these little gray birds nested just across the road on my neighbor’s property. The male chose the utility line, which ran along the road, as one of his territorial perches.

  • Cautious McIntosh comes out on...

    By Ryan Ward
    For the Courier
Eager triathlon participants crowded around the finish line to see their results on a rainy July 28 morning. But on this day, only one man fulfilled his ultimate goal of winning the Evergreen Sprint Triathlon.
Dan McIntosh, who finished the course around Evergreen Lake with the fastest time of 1 hour and 35 seconds, was humble when asked about winning.

  • Clinic preps high school players...

It’s the handling of the club. It’s foot placement. It’s how much divot is taken on any given shot.
Steve Patterson, a PGA golf pro, meticulously works with golfers from Evergreen and Golden high schools on a cool Thursday afternoon at Hiwan Golf Club to prepare them for the 2013 season. There’s a lot of hands-on teaching between him and fellow golf pro Kevin Hanley. More than that, there’s the teaching of the mental aspects of the game to help the players understand that they must practice the way they play.

  • Denver runner in Cruz control at...

MORRISON — From the start, Lonnie Cruz was focused on what was directly in front of him. The stunning scenery of nearby Red Rocks Amphitheatre and its surroundings couldn’t faze the 30-year-old Denver runner. Neither could the building heat as the race wore on. Nothing slowed Cruz down during the Mount Falcon 15K.
