  • Returning Kay hauls in Jeffco...

LAKEWOOD — Jake Kay, Evergreen’s junior 120-pounder who returned to the mat after missing four weeks with a separated right shoulder, went 3-0 and won the 4A Jeffco League wrestling championship Feb. 4 at Bear Creek High School.
Kay, wrestling in round-robin competition, scored the Cougars’ lone championship with his victory over Josh Shipley of Wheat Ridge.
Senior Josh Karnath placed second at 220 pounds, finishing 2-1 in round-robin action. His only loss came to eventual champion Dwight Howes of Arvada.

  • Lobos keep bragging rights

EVERGREEN — Andrew Wolf had never scored a varsity win in 13 previous opportunities. He had yet to wrestle varsity this season for Conifer. But given a chance Feb. 2 at Evergreen High School against the rival Cougars, he wasted little time.
Wolf’s pin of Thad Yeatts in 46 seconds — the fastest match of the night — was one of three head-to-head victories for the Lobos in a 48-30 victory in the Power Cup showdown.

  • Friday's sporting events...

Evergreen's boys and girls basketball games with Wheat Ridge, scheduled for tonight, have been postponed until Monday, Feb. 6 due to the inclement weather.
The boys will play at Wheat Ridge with the varsity game scheduled to start at 7 p.m. The Lady Cougars will host Wheat Ridge at Evergreen High School at the same time.

  • Willows begin their slow ascent...

We’ve been blessed with spring-like weather during much of the month of January, while the high country has had plenty of snow for the ski resorts. Who could ask for any better weather for all of us? Now I can’t help but wonder if we will have to pay for this fine weather with too much snow in February and March. I hope not.
