  • Cougars struggle to stay with CA

    By Craig Harper
    For the Courier
Opening a rebuilding season against perennial Class 4A boys tennis power Colorado Academy, Evergreen co-coach Bob Greenman wasn’t expecting a victory.

  • Wickham’s pitching, early runs...

BOULDER — Ragan Wickham wouldn’t take the credit for her pitching. As the Evergreen senior said, it’s not on her as much as it’s the defense that is backing her up. But, rest assured, the hard-throwing right-hander had just as much to do with the Lady Cougars’ success at the Boulder CreekSide Classic as the defense behind her did.
Wickham allowed just three runs over 19 innings, including two on five hits in the Aug. 31 finals. Three first-inning runs in the round-robin finals held up in Evergreen’s 3-2 victory over 5A Boulder.

  • D’Evelyn keeping EHS in sight

    By Craig Harper
    For the Courier
ARVADA — Evergreen’s breakthrough run to the 4A Jeffco League boys golf championship over D’Evelyn a year ago was almost too easy. Believe it or not, Cougars coach Mike Kuzava feared it might be the same in 2012.
    Yes, feared.
But to his relief, it isn’t.

  • Jeffco Open Space seeks clear...

Jeffco Open Space wants its new master plan to do more than just collect dust.

The plan, which gets an overhaul every five years, will include a set of benchmarks to help the Open Space Division see if it’s meeting stated goals. Previous master plans have lacked goals and objectives that could be measured, said Jeffco Parks and Open Space Director Tom Hoby.

  • Elk are seen and herd at this...

I heard some elk bugling last week when the moon was full. This wasn’t a real challenge call by the “king of the valley” but just a few youngsters — probably yearlings — trying out their calls, not understanding what they were doing but stirred by the moonlight and the distant calls of other elk far, far away.

  • Dakota unleashes offensive fury...

EVERGREEN – Both Dakota Ridge and Evergreen have new coaches in 2013. That, however, is where the similarities ended, at least on Aug. 22.

One team – Evergreen – was coming off a commanding victory over Thornton in its opener. The other – Dakota Ridge – just squeezed out a win over Legend. But, in this one, it was Dakota Ridge from the start.

  • Danni, Cougars pick off Weld...

Joe Danni wasn’t completely sure, but the Evergreen senior defensive back thought the Weld Central receiver had the ball. Then Danni ripped it out, turned and ran. Ninety yards later, he was in the opposite end zone. It was that kind of night for the Evergreen Cougars.

    By Tim Donohoo
    For the Courier
Andrew Adamowski ran a race fit for a president on Aug. 24 in the Bergen Peak Half Marathon. Adamowski, 39, president of the board of directors for the Evergreen Park and Recreation District, won the inaugural half marathon, completing the grueling course from Buchanan Park Recreation Center across Elk Meadow and up to the top of Bergen Peak in 1 hour, 45 minutes and 57 seconds.
