  • Cougars capture regional crown

The Evergreen Lady Cougars certainly didn’t make it easy on themselves. Nevertheless, a pair of 3-2 victories on Oct. 15 at the 4A Region 6 softball tournament at CSU-Pueblo’s Rawlings Sports Complex has Evergreen returning to the 4A state tournament.
The 11th-seeded Lady Cougars fought off upstart Air Academy in the opening round before jumping out to a 3-0 lead on sixth-seeded Pueblo East and holding on to capture the regional championship.
It’s the fifth time in seven years that Evergreen (15-6) has qualified for the 4A state tournament.

  • O’Brien adds to Cougars’ prowess

LITTLETON — In her own words it’s been somewhat of an up-and-down season for Maura O’Brien. But her run at the 4A Jeffco League cross country championships at Clement Park on Oct. 14 was all up.
The Evergreen senior’s time of 19 minutes, 23 seconds was good enough for first place and the Lady Cougars had finishes of first, second and fourth overall to earn another league championship.

  • Evergreen softball team headed...

The 4A softball regionals are Saturday, Oct. 15, and the Evergreen Lady Cougars are headed to Pueblo. Scott Haebe's team, with a 6-2 record in the 4A Jeffco League, finished third in the conference. The top five teams qualified for the 32-team regional field.

Below is a breakdown of the schedule for Region 6. The tournament is double-elimination. The top two teams qualify for the 4A state tournament at Aurora Sports Park on Oct. 21-22.

  • Get ready for winter birds now...

The first snow has fallen. Unfortunately, it came three weeks early this year. However, the fall color is still brilliant in some places, and we still have nice weather next week, according to the weatherman.
I feel that it is early, since the first wet, soggy snow usually arrives on Halloween as if it were a mean trick, leaving all the new kids freezing in their thin costumes. You can always tell the newcomers from anyone who has lived here a few years because they learn to buy Halloween costumes large enough to go over their winter parkas.

  • Peterson plays his game, places...

Keeping score wasn’t Kyle Peterson’s intent. Instead, the Evergreen sophomore golfer used his practice round on Oct. 2 at Windsor’s Pelican Lakes Golf Course — home for this year’s 4A state boys golf championship — to spray shots around the course, hitting different shots and into different places.
    That strategy worked pretty well.

  • Evergreen players denied state...

DENVER — The last time Evergreen’s boys tennis team ran into Alexander Dawson — last month during a regular-season match at Evergreen Sports Center — it was hardly competitive. Dawson rolled to seven straight-set victories.
This time when they met again at the 4A Region 1 tournament Oct. 5-6 at Colorado Academy there was a whole lot more on the line, and the matches, for the most part, resembled that.

  • D’Evelyn rallies, surprises...

The Evergreen Lady Cougars got off to a hot start, but they couldn’t hold off Ellie Brandon and the rest of the D’Evelyn volleyball squad, falling in five games on Oct. 5 at EHS.
    D’Evelyn won 22-25, 14-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-9.
In a back-and-forth first game, the Lady Cougars (10-4 overall, 5-1 4A Jeffco) edged out the visiting Lady Jaguars. And Evergreen seemed to be hitting its stride in Game 2 behind the strong setting of senior Allison Aafedt. But its momentum ended there and the rest of the match was all D’Evelyn.

  • 4A state golf: Peterson, Cougars...

WINDSOR -- Evergreen sophomore Kyle Peterson shot a 1-over 145 two-day score to tie for seventh at the 4A boys state golf championship on Oct. 3-4 at Pelican Lakes Golf Club.
Peterson carded a 2-under 70 over the first 18 holes, including five birdies, before settling for a 75 on Day 2.
He finished 17 strokes back of Valor Christian's Wyndham Clark, who won his second state title with back-to-back rounds of 64 on the Par-72, 6,566-yard course.

  • Grieve's OT goal propels...

LAKEWOOD -- To hear senior defender Brian Grieve explain it, the Evergreen Cougars have a simple strategy.
The defenders want to win the ball, put it back in the center midfield, get them to play it around the field, get it outside and get everything to the forwards so they can look for their shots. Ironically, or maybe not, it was Grieve himself who found his shot for the Cougars against D'Evelyn on Oct. 4 at Lakewood Memorial Field.
