Winter seems to have settled in with a fairly stable blanket of white. However, it is not too deep for walking in most of our area, and all but the back roads are fairly passable. This makes it possible for most anyone to get out to see what winter has in store.

  • Year in review: Top 10 sports...

2010 saw many things, from the Evergreen football team making a rare state playoff appearance to individual state titles in gymnastics and skiing to a domininating run by the cross country team. The following is a list of the Canyon Courier’s Top 10 sports stories for the past year:

  • Weasel sighting was among bird...

The Christmas Bird Count is over. Sunday, Dec. 19, was a pleasant day as CBC days go.

  • Cougars misfire on offense

BROOMFIELD — It’s not like Evergreen’s boys basketball team didn’t give itself chances. The Cougars’ defense more than held its own against Broomfield on Dec. 18. But it was the team’s offense that didn’t come through for one reason or another.

  • Broomfield game learning...

BROOMFIELD — There was no question about it — the Evergreen Lady Cougars were facing a tall order playing four-time defending 4A state champion Broomfield on its home court Dec. 18.

That would be tall both literally and figuratively.

  • Clear Creek grapplers top...

Rick Riley was hoping he would get more matches than the ones he did get. That’s how much the Clear Creek 152-pounder loves to wrestle.

Yet even still his two matches were more than most got Dec. 15 as Clear Creek’s varsity wrestling team hosted mountain rivals Evergreen and Platte Canyon in the annual triangular match. And Riley made the most of those matches, scoring a pair of pinfall victories as the Golddiggers swept their dual bouts.

  • Evergreen’s late rally falls...

Bryn Haebe did her part, hitting three big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Jordan Florschuetz and Hailey Newhall did theirs as well, scoring in double figures yet again.

But so did Mesa Ridge’s Kaitlyn Mileto. And so did the Grizzlies’ defense.

  • Fortik, Mayer pace Evergreen...

LAKEWOOD — Evergreen High School’s head girls swimming coach Jeanne Godaire is expecting, both literally and metaphorically, so when the Lady Cougars met the Golden Demons last Friday at the Green Mountain Recreation Center, the pressure was on.

Godaire, who was expecting to have her first child last week, was still very much pregnant Dec. 10 when Evergreen took to the pool in the heated meet.

  • Roundup: Cougars rally in fourth...

LAKEWOOD — Kevin Mitchell scored 17 points and Sean Leslie added 15 as Arvada West handed Evergreen a 49-40 loss on Dec. 11 at Green Mountain High School.

Arvada West opened up a 19-9 lead at halftime and 36-20 after three quarters before the Cougars rallied in the fourth.
