  • August brings late wildflowers,...

    July has been a great month. Most of the days have been blue and sunny, with cool mornings and warm afternoons with scattered showers. The summers of 1965 and 1969 were much like this, and I had very little need to water to have a bountiful garden. It seemed like we had moved to Camelot.

  • Hamilton burns up Town Race

    Runners at the 31st annual Evergreen Town Race were treated to ideal weather conditions Aug. 2, and as a result, posted some lightning-quick times.

    Joel Hamilton, 24, of Golden took home the 5K title, crossing the finish line in 14 minutes, 33 seconds. Adam Rich of Colorado Springs was second, finishing in an even 15 minutes. Andy Giravly was the top Evergreen finisher, placing 15th with a time of 17:12.

  • Courier editor finds his stride

    Before I begin, I should make one point:

    I am not a fan of running.

    I don’t say that to be mean. I have no beef with anyone that chooses to run and think it’s great when people perform any type of exercise.

    But, for me, when it comes to selecting activities for cardiovascular exercise, running usually comes up last in a list of things I’d choose to do.

    PINE and BUFFALO CREEK — There’s something about asking a local. Whether it be skiing, snowboarding or mountain biking, getting tips from a local can turn the average day into something epic.

    So when I met a local mountain biker near the Pike National Forest work station in Buffalo Creek, I hoped for a few pointers. I got about 30.

  • Horn wins world championship

    It’s been nearly a decade, but Jody Horn can again call himself a current world champion.

    Horn, who is a fifth-degree black belt and chief instructor at Paragon Martial Arts, was crowned world champion for the third time – the first since 2000 – at the American Taekwondo Association’s world championships held last month in Little Rock, Ark. Horn earned a world championship in sparring, one of four disciplines open for competition.

  • Kids need to be aware of...

    If you have not taken a drive to see the wildflowers this year, now is the time to do it, for they will soon fade. Shrine Pass is always a delightful trip for wildflowers, and many can be seen without a great deal of walking. Arapaho Pass (west of Boulder) is also excellent but takes a bit longer and involves a bit more hiking. The unusual amount of moisture this year has made the wildflowers exceptional. Just last week friends of mine drove me to Bailey for dinner one evening, and the flowers along U.S. 285 were prolific, and the back roads were spectacular.

  • Many interesting sights in...

    Recently, my wife and I took a week-long trip to Seattle.

    At this point, you’re probably asking yourself ‘Why Seattle?’ It seemed that was a popular question from friends and family after we began telling people about our summer plans.

    The short answer to that question is that we both have always been interested in seeing the Emerald City; and we were able to find really cheap plane tickets.

    The trip was amazing. The weather was great, staying around 80 degrees and it only rained once, believe it or not.

  • Cougars booted

    BROOMFIELD — Evergreen’s start to the Central Colorado Baseball League’s Bottom-A final tournament was nearly flawless.

    Thanks to great situational hitting and solid pitching from Caleb Garbus, the Cougars steamrolled Northglenn 11-1 in six innings on July 16 at Legacy High School.

    Unfortunately for Evergreen, things went straight downhill from there as they lost 10-7 to host Legacy later in the day and were knocked out of the double-elimination tournament in a rematch with Northglenn on July 17, where they dropped a 3-0 decision.
