  • Evergreen Lake too congested for...

    The first two days of fall brought quite a few migrating birds to Evergreen Lake. A cold front moving down out of Canada brought cold rain followed by the first snow. I am not ready for snow yet and hope we may still have some Indian summer weather.

  • Turnovers, penalties slow down...

    LAKEWOOD — When you’re a young team such as the Evergreen Cougars, you can’t afford to make mistakes.

    The Cougars repeatedly shot themselves in the foot Sept. 25 in their 42-14 loss to Valor Christian at Trailblazer Stadium, and that bothered the coaching staff.

    “At this point in the season, you’d like to not be still making rookie mistakes,” Evergreen coach Rob Molholm said. “Against a good football team like (Valor Christian), you have to play mistake-free football and we didn’t do that.”

  • Cougars spiked

    Ashley Phelps didn’t know exactly what she was getting into Sept. 23. Cara Walderman knew, and she didn’t want to miss it for the world.

    Not Conifer vs. Evergreen. Not the one game all year when the volleyball teams play before a packed house.

    Phelps, a junior who missed last year’s tilt because of injury, and Walderman, a senior who was cleared to play minutes before the game, combined with devastating efficiency as the Lobos swept the Cougars in their own house.

  • Autumn in the Colorado Rockies...

    The first day of autumn has arrived and with it came our first really cold day, which made it really feel like autumn. I’m not happy to see the cold weather come, but at least it gives me a good excuse to have a fire in the fireplace in the evening. The aspen have reached their peak in the high country; they were beautiful at Echo Lake this week, but those in our valley are still green.

  • A mouse in the house is worse...

    There is definitely a hint of autumn in the air and in other places, too. Yes, the cool dawn air is sweet, clean and sharp from our cold nights.

    The rising sun is welcome and warming, but afternoon showers soon cool things off again. There are signs of fall, also.The first aspen tree in the valley below our house has turned golden and is now beginning to lose its leaves. The grasses are ripening their seed heads, so our hillside is now a warm tawny tan, with splotches of green from weeds and bits of red from wood beauty cinquefoil and wild roses.

  • Despite injuries, gymnasts...

    Evergreen, the reigning Class 4A state champions, topped Lakewood in a gymnastics dual meet, 165.425 to 155.575 on Sept. 17 at Lakewood High School.

    The Cougars, who figure to be pushed by Elizabeth for the 4A crown, have gone through some injuries as of late. Micala Mitchek is currently out of action, as is Dani Adams, who injured her ankle in the Lakewood meet. Jessica Himmelman and Elise Pate are also out with injuries.

  • Evergreen running strong

    LITTLETON — When you spend most of your time running in the mountains, making the transition to a more urban setting can be difficult.

    Bryn Haebe and the Evergreen girls cross-country team had no such difficulties, as they dominated the field in the girls Division 3 race at the Sept. 18 Liberty Bell Invitational at Heritage High School.

    Led by Haebe’s second-place finish, the Cougars went on to claim five of the top-15 spots for an impressive team score of 33. The next-closest team was Niwot, 80 points back with 113.

  • Finches, sparrows abound as...

    After a hard rain during the night, the morning of Aug. 30 was damp, misty, humid, partly cloudy, partly sunny, foggy, hazy and warm, with a slight breeze that would sway the tall grasses and flowers occasionally just enough to send a raindrop rolling off.

    There was a definite feeling of autumn in the air that Sunday morning and an unusual number of birds in the yard and at the feeders. I was only getting quick flashes of them from the window, so I finally went out on the carport where I could see over a larger area and follow them from place to place.

  • Tough loss for Cougars

    LAKEWOOD — Evergreen coach Rob Molholm is a Farmer at heart.

    So when Molholm stood in the shadow of the scoreboard at Trailblazer Stadium on Friday that showed his Cougars losing 14-10 to Elizabeth, he thought back to his gridiron roots. And for a guy from Wheat Ridge, a program with shelf full of state titles and a tough-guy reputation, moral victories don’t get you very far.

    “We got a lot of things to work on, but one thing we don’t have to work on is heart,” Molholm said.

  • Evergreen smashes Conifer

    In between the comedy and yelling, Zach Fuller and Nate Chart played some entertaining tennis Sept. 10.

    In a No. 1 singles match that headlined the Conifer and Evergreen Class 4A Jefferson County League dual match, Fuller and Chart - two friends who are very familiar with each other’s games - went at each other for every point.

    “I was playing for the moment because I’m good friends with Nate,” Fuller said.

    Chart captured the moment, however, as the top Evergreen player won 6-3, 6-4. Behind Charter, the Cougars rolled to a 5-2 team victory.
