When folks come to Colorado and see the first hummingbirds arrive in mid-April, they are likely to mistake them for the well-known ruby-throated hummingbird. While they greatly resemble each other, there are noticeable differences between our spritely local species — the broad-tailed hummingbird — and the ruby-throated.

DENVER — Evergreen’s class 4A baseball playoff journey ended where few imagined it would conclude — playing for the state title Sunday, against defending champion Valor Christian.
However, despite the rough ride that included a 3-4 record in the class 4A Jeffco League and just making the postseason with a No. 28 ranking in the RPI, the Cougars believed they had the potential to shock the rest of the state in the postseason.

She was lying in a shallow ditch, very still, when our dogs spotted her. They sniffed her curiously, and before we could react, one dog gave her a quick lick on the nose before we shooed them away.
I very slowly approached the tiny elk calf, at first concerned about her condition. Was she hurt? Should I call Parks and Wildlife for help? I agonized that she may even be dead. She was so utterly still. Her body lay in a shallow ditch, her head resting quietly on the path.

  • Conifer falls in semifinals

LAFAYETTE — As his athletes got off the bus on May 17, Conifer head coach Paul Taylor became emotional and for a good reason.
His Lobos had just been eliminated in the 4A state boys’ lacrosse state semifinals with a 17-4 loss against top-seeded Dawson. One-by-one, his seniors walked over and embraced in a hug along with words of encouragement.
“This is the last time I’ll see some of these guys,” Taylor explained. “We’ve already had our banquet, and man, this is a special group.”
