  • Burke ready to make debut

Seventeen-year-olds rarely have life-altering decisions to make like the one Brock Burke faced last month. The University of Oregon signee, who won’t turn 18 until Aug. 4, was drafted in the third round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Does one go to college and get that degree or go straight to work as a professional baseball player? Tampa Bay made the decision easy for him.

But each time, he got a little bit faster.

The June 28 event served as the Baylor University lacrosse athlete’s first 5K, and despite finishing 11th overall in a field of 32 runners — 52 runners competed in the 10K portion — Kloack was all smiles as she crossed the finish line in 32 minutes, 20 seconds.

  • Friedberg uses ultra as a tune-up

PINE — Michael Friedberg had two primary reasons for running in the fifth annual North Fork 50 ultramarathon. First, he decided to give it a whirl after talking to previous competitors who complimented the 50-mile race. Two, it was a training session of sorts.

  • Red-winged blackbirds are...

Below my window is the roof of two buildings and two large paved parking lots that were scraped flat out of the hillside. Because of our hard rains, these are drained away to prevent puddling.

  • Forest Service: Closing areas to...

A plan to close a 400,000-acre zone of land in the foothills to recreational shooting would help the U.S. Forest Service manage the sport the way it does other recreation on public lands, according to an official.
