A broken bat and broken hearts were all that the Conifer Lady Lobos’ softball team left with after being defeated by the Evergreen Lady Cougars, 6-3, on Sept. 22 at Evegreen High School.
“We didn’t execute,” Conifer head coach Carrie Oletski said. “We had chances where we should have dropped a bunt and we couldn’t drop a bunt. We had runners on second with two outs and we didn’t go on the hit, so we didn’t score. It was all of the things that we have been working on (in practice) that just didn’t come together.”

The following is a quarter-by-quarter breakdown of the fourth annual Mountain Bowl, won by the Evergreen Cougars 17-10 over the host Conifer Lobos on Sept. 22 at Lobo Field.

September is such an unpredictable month. It is a lovely end of summer with warm sunny days and cool nights. It is gray cold days with scattered showers. It often brings the first snow, which usually melts the next day, as well as our first frost. It wants to be summer, but winter is pushing at the door so hard that it will soon be in, whether we like it or not.

CONIFER — Skylar Budd’s game was fairly consistent. But as his match with Evergreen’s Matt Golub went along the Cougars’ No. 1 singles player’s confidence grew. Golub started hitting more ground strokes into the corner. He started taking more chances. And he was getting a lot of winners because of that.
It all added up to a 6-0, 6-1 win for Golub in Evergreen’s eventual 6-1 team victory Sept. 13 at Conifer High School’s tennis courts.
