  • Solitaires stay around and stake...

The first Townsend’s solitaire that I ever saw was shortly after we moved to Colorado in April 1965. I was looking around our new yard and saw a strange gray bird just across the road, clinging to a giant mullein stalk in the open valley above Little Cub Creek. I watched it digging insects out of the dead mullein stalk and thought how often I had seen downy woodpeckers acting in the same manner.

  • Evergreen out in quarterfinals

AURORA — Breeze Phillips walked off the field and let out a sigh of relief.
The Evergreen ace pitcher had held Broomfield in check for six innings, allowing just two early runs. But the ninth-seeded Lady Eagles, with their backs up against the wall, scored three runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on second with one out.

  • O’Brien rolls on, captures...

DENVER — Maura O’Brien, on the heels of winning the 4A Jeffco League championship, ran a time of 19 minutes, 40 seconds and won the 4A Region 1 championship on Oct. 21 at Denver’s City Park.

  • Sayler places second at regionals

DENVER — Evergreen’s Jackson Sayler finished in 16 minutes, 47 seconds, placing second at the 4A Region 1 cross country championships on Oct. 21 at Denver’s City Park. He finished just three seconds back of Centaurus’ Chandler Reid.
Evergreen, as a team, placed fifth with 116 points, qualifying for the 4A state championships on Oct. 29 at Aurora’s Arapahoe County Fairgrounds.
Other finishers were Sam Sahli (14th), Jeff Sahli (27th), Nick Marti (32nd), George Clark (41st), Thomas Warren (43rd), and Daniel Holmes (46th).

  • Lady Cougars rally past Green...

LAKEWOOD — In a back-and-forth match Oct. 20, the Evergreen Lady Cougars collected a 3-2, fifth-game win against Green Mountain.
Evergreen, a straight-set winner over Thomas Jefferson in its regular-season finale one day later, has won 10 of it last 12 entering postseason play. The Lady Cougars (14-5, 8-2 4A Jeffco) are the third seed of the Jeffco League and will play in the District 1 tournament Oct. 28-29 at Longmont High School. Evergreen is joined in the district by Longmont, Denver South, Frederick, Niwot and Elizabeth.

  • Squirrels bring life, activity...

When I was out on the patio to catch some of the fine fall sunshine the other day, I was sworn at with a loud, vociferous, emphatic blast of squirrel language. The western red squirrel, which has been challenging me all summer, had in just a few cold days claimed the patio as his territory with firm determination and loud raucous cussing at everyone else who thought to claim it for a few hours.

  • Evergreen answers wake-up call

ENGLEWOOD — Rob Molholm didn’t have to sugarcoat it for his Evergreen Cougars. Their Oct. 14 game against host Englewood was, for all intent and purposes, a playoff game.
Maybe it wasn’t in the literal sense, but coming off a 3A Metro South conference loss two weeks earlier at Summit the last thing, in all likelihood, the Cougars could afford is to lose another one.
“This is a playoff game, straight-up playoff game. I was saying it all week long that this is a playoff game,” Molholm said.

  • Cougars capture regional crown

The Evergreen Lady Cougars certainly didn’t make it easy on themselves. Nevertheless, a pair of 3-2 victories on Oct. 15 at the 4A Region 6 softball tournament at CSU-Pueblo’s Rawlings Sports Complex has Evergreen returning to the 4A state tournament.
The 11th-seeded Lady Cougars fought off upstart Air Academy in the opening round before jumping out to a 3-0 lead on sixth-seeded Pueblo East and holding on to capture the regional championship.
It’s the fifth time in seven years that Evergreen (15-6) has qualified for the 4A state tournament.

  • O’Brien adds to Cougars’ prowess

LITTLETON — In her own words it’s been somewhat of an up-and-down season for Maura O’Brien. But her run at the 4A Jeffco League cross country championships at Clement Park on Oct. 14 was all up.
The Evergreen senior’s time of 19 minutes, 23 seconds was good enough for first place and the Lady Cougars had finishes of first, second and fourth overall to earn another league championship.

  • Evergreen softball team headed...

The 4A softball regionals are Saturday, Oct. 15, and the Evergreen Lady Cougars are headed to Pueblo. Scott Haebe's team, with a 6-2 record in the 4A Jeffco League, finished third in the conference. The top five teams qualified for the 32-team regional field.

Below is a breakdown of the schedule for Region 6. The tournament is double-elimination. The top two teams qualify for the 4A state tournament at Aurora Sports Park on Oct. 21-22.
