  • Evergreen football hosting...

Evergreen’s varsity football team, coming off a 41-0 win at Summit to cap an 8-2 regular season and an undefeated 3A Metro West Conference slate, will host Silver Creek in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
The game is scheduled for Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood.
The Cougars locked up a second league title in three years two weeks ago with their win over Alameda.
Silver Creek (7-2), which placed second in the 3A Tri-Valley, won the 2012 state championship with a 32-15 win over top-seeded Rifle.

THORNTON — Chancey Hines knew that her team could’ve done better. The first-year Evergreen head coach had that look about her in the aftermath of the 4A state gymnastics team competition Nov. 1 at Thornton High School.
“It wasn’t the best of days for us. We had a lot of mistakes starting from floor and all the way through bars. It was just hard to regain our confidence,” Hines said after Evergreen, despite scoring a season-best 176 points, placed third in this year’s competition.

BROOMFIELD — Right place, right time.
The Evergreen Cougars made it a habit to back up most, if not every, shot they took on goal against No. 2 seed Broomfield. The results were rebound goals by Cole Mitchek and Borja Garcia as part of Evergreen’s 4-0 upset of the host Eagles in the 4A boys soccer state quarterfinals on Nov. 2.

  • Cougars beat the clock, Wizards

Griffin Dorsey was on such an emotional high after Evergreen’s thrilling, almost unbelievable 3-2 victory over Windsor on Oct. 23 that he didn’t want to come down. Who could blame him?
The Cougars freshman scored an improbable, if not impossible, goal with 2 seconds remaining to send the host Evergreen High crowd into a frenzy mere seconds after the 4A boys soccer state playoff opener seemed destined to go into overtime.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Camille Morales said that she couldn’t have said it any better, but it’s seemingly true when it comes to Evergreen High School cross country. It’s not about the individuals as much as it’s about the program itself.
That truth has never been more so than it was in 2013.

  • Check out scrub-jays at Red...

One of our most interesting birds is the western scrub-jay. This bird is not regularly found in Evergreen, but it is found in Kittredge and in Red Rocks Park. It is not a forest bird, but it is a bird of the scrub-land area. You can tell if you are in good jay country just by looking at the shrub growth. It can be found regularly in the scrub oak along the road, which is the Morrison entrance to Red Rocks Park.

  • Campers should watch out for...

While my family was here to celebrate my birthday, I had the opportunity to visit Echo Lake. We drove up for one last trip before snow puts an end to our mountain driving in hopes of showing my family the beautiful aspen gold of our autumn.

A common theme prevailed for Chatfield, Columbine and Evergreen’s top gymnasts at the 5A/4A Jeffco League championships on Oct. 19 at Evergreen High School: good but there’s room for improvement heading into this week’s regionals and the following week’s state meets.

  • Cougars, Demons fit to be tied...

ARVADA — It took a while — a good while — but Evergreen gave itself the chance it needed.
