  • Cougars escape Golden, but just...

GOLDEN — Chase Kelly never knew otherwise if he was to hold the ball out for a potential last-second shot or not. All he saw was an opportunity and he took it.
“I don’t know. I didn’t hear coach say one shot or anything,” Kelly said. “I was wide open. I felt like it was the best shot we would get on the possession. I took it and it ended up good.”

  • Slow start dooms Lady Cougars

GOLDEN — Be it the 16 rebounds in the first half — 12 on the defensive glass — or Golden’s 14-3 run late in the second quarter there’s little question that the Lady Demons came out ready to play.
Even though the team is on restrictions via CHSAA for superseding varsity and junior varsity playing time, as  reported by the Denver Post, Golden played early in its 47-40 home victory over Evergreen on Feb.14 like a team on a mission.

DENVER — It was billed as the rematch and a chance for the Evergreen boys basketball team to stake its claim as an equal with D’Evelyn atop the 4A Jeffco League.
Unfortunately for the Cougars, that didn’t happen. Evergreen lost 72-45 at D’Evelyn on  Feb 8 and fell to 8-2 in league play while the Jaguars remained perfect, moving to 10-0.

  • Scene leaves lasting impression...

Sam Skold went to watch an indoor track meet at the Air Force Academy a couple of years ago. Seeing cadets in uniform, displaying their dedication and loyalty left a lasting impression. Ever since Air Force has been on her mind, Skold said.
“Ever since I was little I wanted to do something greater than myself. Now, given the opportunity to run for the Air Force Academy gave me the right push to go into the military,” Skold said.

  • Cougars’ Kay kicks it into gear...

LAKEWOOD — Jake Kay’s round-robin bracket left a lot of down time early on Feb. 9 at Bear Creek High School.
“It was really boring,” Kay said of the slow start to his tournament. But it started to pick up after the initial delay and all in his favor.
The Evergreen senior 126-pounder went 4-0 with a pair of pinfall victories, a 17-1 technical fall of Wheat Ridge’s Josh Shippley and a 12-0 major decision over Conifer’s Bronson Spies to win a third straight 4A Jeffco League championship.

  • Snowboarders, skiers wow crowd

Several people spotted K-Fed at Evergreen Lake House on Feb. 9 at the Rail Jam competition. No, not Britney Spears’ ex-husband, but the freestyle snowboard trick also known as a frontside switch-up to a 270 backside out.
Still confused? Yeah, the average skier or snowboarder might not understand the lingo, but at the Rail Jam competition, which capped off the final day of the second-annual Winter Festival, spectators didn’t have to know what the tricks were called to know they were wickedly cool.

  • Canada geese have unusual...

Recently, a reader of this column wrote, asking me to write the story about our local Canada geese. I really don’t know much about this for the changes in the geese population occurred before we moved to this area.

  • Bird feeders, plus native plants...

A long-time summer resident recently asked by writing to me via the High Timber Times if I would write an article on how she could attract birds to the yard of her summer cabin near Hangen Ranch.

This is a subject that can’t be properly covered in an article of the usual length for it must cover feeding supplemental food, and planting native shrubs and non-native shrubs that will bear food that attracts birds. She does not say what her property is like: open, forested or creekside, or whether she has a flower or vegetable garden.
