  • Elusive Townsend’s solitaires...

We moved into this house on April 19, 1965. That’s nearly 48 years ago, but many of you may recall the article I wrote about trying to find a pygmy owl that we heard calling that first night.

Unfortunately, I do not hear pygmy owls calling as much as I used to. Their call is much more often heard than the owls are seen, for these tiny owls can disappear in a clump of pine needles or other foliage, and they are ventriloquists. They are not where you think they are.

Evergreen’s Tenney cards 88 as Lady Cougars take 3rd in opener
    GOLDEN
    — Madison Tenney carded a team-best score of 88 as the Evergreen Lady Cougars opened the 2013 season with a third-place finish in the 4A Jeffco League opener March 19 at Applewood Golf Course.
Tenney, a junior, placed fourth individually.
Evergreen’s Emily Rivers fired a 100, Kelsey Evezich shot a 110, while Hanna Esau and Carly Ratekin carded a 119 each.

  • Wind challenges EHS’ serve, but...

ARVADA — For someone who has played doubles her entire career, it’s uncharted territory for Genevieve DeGrandchamp to play No. 2 singles for the Evergreen Lady Cougars. It’s a little weird, she said — but she’s fitting in just fine so far in 2013.

  • Experience pays off for Cougars

The fact that it was a varsity game and that it counted in the 4A Foothills Conference league standings wasn’t lost on the Evergreen Cougars. But this was the Cougars’ junior varsity boys lacrosse program that was playing Clear Creek’s varsity on March 20.

  • Ball bounces Lady Eagles’ way in...

LAKEWOOD — Kayla Latham figured it was just a matter of time before the Dakota Ridge Lady Eagles would score. When they did — and, incidentally, it was on a goal by her — it was the momentum shift they needed in the South Jeffco Invitational.

  • Cougars thrilled with start to...

DENVER — Considering how little his team had actually been on a baseball diamond in preparation for the 2013 season, Evergreen baseball coach Matt Erholtz could find little not to like about the Cougars’ 8-2 victory over host John F. Kennedy on March 16.
Jack Drumright and two relievers combined on a two-hitter, and six different batters had hits in Evergreen’s second straight win. The Cougars defeated Westminster 5-0 the day before in the weather-delayed season opener behind Jake Englehart’s one-hitter.

  • Cougars wake from 1st-half...

Try as he might first-year Evergreen boys lacrosse coach Zach Buckley could not get his Cougars to play with any emotion in the first half March 15 against Windsor. But something woke Evergreen up from its first-half slumber, even if it baffled Buckley as to what it was that did so.
Jakob Koons, Dylan Haga and Zach Strande each scored a pair of second-half goals as Evergreen scored eight consecutive times en route to an 8-3 victory over the visiting Wizards at Evergreen High School.

  • Mourning doves make an early...

On Friday, March 8, all the weathermen were forecasting another severe snow. By Saturday evening, they had been proven to be right with another foot of snow on the patio picnic table. On Friday, I was having lunch where I could watch the birds at the feeder. It was a busy sight with all of the winter moochers trying to fill up before the snow came. There was nothing new or especially interesting to be seen, but when I moved closer to the window to see if there was anything on the ground under the feeders, there was a sudden explosion of flight as two mourning doves took off.
