  • Cougars hold on late vs. Lobos

Noah Ansley, because of Evergreen’s proficient running game, is just as likely to hurt an opposing defense with his feet as the Evergreen quarterback can do with his arm. Never was that more true than on Nov. 4.

  • Late goal sends Cougars to state...

ENGLEWOOD — Ethan Jackson felt like the Evergreen Cougars, which they’ve become accustomed to, had great possession of the ball and deserved to win their 4A boys soccer state semifinal game with Niwot on Nov. 5 at Englewood High School. Whether or not they would though depended on if someone, anyone, would catch the one break they needed.
    Jackson caught it.

  • Evergreen tops Niwot, advances...

ENGLEWOOD -- Ethan Jackson punched home the game's lone goal left-footed from 25 yards out in the 70th minute and Evergreen advanced to the 4A boys soccer state championship game with a 1-0 win over Niwot on Nov. 5 at Englewood High School.
The second-seeded Cougars (17-2) will play fourth-seeded Mullen (12-5-2), a 2-1 winner over top-seeded Broomfield, in the state finals on Nov. 9 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. Evergreen beat Mullen 1-0 in the teams' regular-season meeting.

  • Evergreen captures 4A state...

THORNTON -- Evergreen, behind first-place team finishes in the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise, captured its second 4A state gymnastics title and first since 2008 on Nov. 5 at Thornton High School.
The Lady Cougars scored a school-record 182 points, easily topping two-time state champion Elizabeth, which finished with 180.875 points. Thompson Valley came in a distant third with 170.1.

  • Mountain Bowl: Late TD gives...

Evergreen quarterback Noah Ansley scrambled in from six yards out with 5 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in a defensive struggle, and the Cougars stopped Conifer quarterback Thomas Kim on 4th-and-goal from the 9 with 6.4 seconds left for a 13-9 victory in the Mountain Bowl on Nov. 4 at Evergreen High School.
The win not only gave Evergreen (9-1) the 3A Metro South conference title, but also clinched a first-round home playoff game next week. The Colorado High School Activities Association will release first-round playoff pairings on Nov. 6.

  • Evergreen reaches 4A state...

The possession game is Evergreen's bread and butter. If the Cougars control the ball and the clock more times than not they're going to win. Early on against Battle Mountain in the 4A boys soccer state quarterfinals on Nov. 1, Evergreen didn't possess the ball as much as it normally does.
Even so, the Cougars still managed to score in the game's first three minutes thanks to Scott Boland and once they found their offensive rhythm Sam Hamilton scored twice en route to a 3-1 win over Battle Mountain at Evergreen High School.

  • First snowflakes herald the...

When I was in fifth grade, we were required to learn a poem and present it before our class. The poem I chose to learn and recite was the one printed below.

    The First Snowfall
The snow had begun in the gloaming,
    And busily all the night
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white.
Every pine and fir and hemlock
Wore ermine too dear for an earl,
And the poorest twig on the elm tree
Was ridged inch deep with pearl.

  • Cougars pummel Ridgeview

The Evergreen Cougars won their third straight game, celebrating homecoming with a 49-0 win over Ridgeview Academy on Oct. 28 at Evergreen High School.
It also marked Evergreen’s sixth straight win at EHS over the past two seasons.
The Cougars improved to 8-1 overall, 4-1 in the 3A Metro South heading into their Nov. 4 game against rival Conifer (6-3, 5-0). The winner of that game will lock up the conference championship, an automatic berth in this year’s 16-team 3A football playoffs and a home postseason game next week.

  • Evergreen comes up one win short...

LONGMONT — It didn’t take Evergreen volleyball coach Katie Ryan long to pinpoint where her Lady Cougars’ volleyball team missed its chance to get into this weekend’s regional volleyball tournament.

  • Jackson’s goal, assist lift...

Ethan Jackson scored one goal and assisted on another as the Evergreen Cougars advanced to the 4A state quarterfinals with a 4-1 win over 15th-seeded Durango on Oct. 29 at Evergreen High School.
Sam Hamilton, Scott Boland and Brian Grieve also scored for the Cougars, who played 10th-seeded Battle Mountain (14-1-2), a 7-1 winner over Sand Creek, in the quarterfinals on Nov. 1. Results of that game weren’t available at press time, but can be found online at www.canyoncourier.com.
Kevin Schulte and Jared Cochran added an assist against Durango.
