  • Slow start doesn’t derail...

LAKEWOOD — Jon Cohen wasn’t at liberty to say exactly what he told his Evergreen Cougars during an early timeout in their March 21 game with Green Mountain, and rightfully so.
There wasn’t a whole lot of nice things to be said after the Cougars’ boys lacrosse team surrendered three goals in the game’s first eight minutes at Trailblazer Stadium. But whatever was said it worked.

  • Warm weather brings buds on...

What a remarkable day this has been. It is only March, but the temperature soared to 72 degrees in Denver, and it feels like spring.
The sky is mostly blue, and the willows along Bear Creek area dressed in their brilliant spring orange-yellow. The buds of the narrow-leaf cottonwood are swelling. The sticky bud scales are giving color to the otherwise bare crown. As the buds swell, the crown appears to start to fill in or thicken even though there is not yet a true leaf in sight.

Cougars off to 4-0 start after shutout victory over Legend

Evergreen, a year after making the playoffs for the first time in school history, is off to a 4-0 start in 2012 following a 10-0 win over Legend on March 17 at EHS.
The Cougars have outscored the opposition 50-18 in its first four games. Evergreen has scored 10 or more goals in each of its victories this season.
Evergreen plays Green Mountain at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood on March 21. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

  • Evergreen’s 4x400 relay team...

LAKEWOOD — Maybe for some it wouldn’t have been as enjoyable, but for Gwen Marter running a leg of Evergreen’s 4x400 relay March 15 at Jeffco Stadium was the most fun she had all day.
Winning will do that for you.
“It had been an average day, (but) running like that is so awesome,” Marter said after teaming with freshman Camille Morales, fellow junior Shannon Gudal and senior Maura O’Brien to run Evergreen to a meet-winning time of 4 minutes, 48.60 seconds at the 4A Jeffco League meet.

  • Evergreen catches breaks to top...

It would be safe to say that the bounces definitely went Evergreen’s way in this one.
A header from Kylee Russell to teammate Ellie Petrik allowed the Evergreen forward to push ahead for the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute of a 2-1 win over Bear Creek on March 17 at Evergreen High School. It was her second goal of the game.
“It was all thanks to my teammate Kylee Russell. She headed it perfectly over and I got on it perfectly and ended up scoring off the rebound,” Petrik said.

  • Evergreen’s patience pays off

Patience is a virtue, and the Evergreen Cougars proved that in their season opener.
Four walks, two hit batsmen, two sacrifices and an error, coupled with two hits, was the offense for EHS in the first two innings as it scored five runs en route to an 11-1 rout of Platte Canyon in its season opener March 17 at Evergreen High School. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth due to the 10-run mercy rule.

  • Mountain bluebirds already seen...

The weather has been surprisingly spring-like this past week. However, driving by the lake, I noticed very little change. It remains frozen shore to shore. The first sign of ice breakup is usually the appearance of a larger and larger amount of open water at the inlet.
