  • Runners blooming in time at...

GEORGETOWN — Ryan Herzog didn’t run in high school back in Duluth, Minn., or in college when he studied at the Minnesota College of Design. As a matter of fact, he didn’t start running until seven years ago, and that was to reduce the weight he had added while in college.
“I lost my fitness from the sports in my younger years, so I got into running kind of by fluke,” the 33-year-old Superior resident said.

  • ‘Just being a kid’ again

There were the Gorilla Warfare, the Kickballers, the Catalina Wine Mixers, Aces of Bases, Remax Alliance and Arvada Young Professionals. And there were players with nicknames such as Toe-Knee, Malibu, E, and Dr. Angelface, to name just a few. Teams had designed their own T-shirts. Some wore tie-dye apparel. But all were having a good time — notwithstanding the final scores — at the third annual Evergreen Kickball Classic at the Marshdale Fields.

  • The tale of a 41-year-old...

After an unusually hot spell during the first two weeks of June, the weather has returned to the June normal of hot sunny days and cold nights. However, I am glad to be able to keep my windows closed for it keeps out a bit of the pine pollen.

  • Rodeo notebook: Shirley holds...

Tim Shirley walked behind the stalls at the El Pinal Rodeo Arena, but he so desperately wanted to be part of the action instead of an innocent bystander at the 47th annual Evergreen Rodeo.
That’s been the case for two years running, however, since the 31-year-old Bailey resident broke the L5 vertebra in his back during a February 2012 rodeo event in San Antonio, Texas. He hasn’t ridden since.

  • Gillen juggles family life with...

It’s Father’s Day, and it’s everything that 43-year-old Brian Gillen could ask for.
With his family in attendance, the veteran tie-down roper sits atop his wife’s horse, Zaney, and shoots out of the gate in pursuit of the runaway calf. Unfortunately, this time, at the El Pinal Rodeo Arena as part of the 47th annual Evergreen Rodeo, he couldn’t catch up. Though the end result isn’t what any rider hopes for, the sheer excitement of the competition is well worth it, Gillen said.

  • Coach of the year

Kirk Petrik has been coaching the Evergreen ski program for five years, and he’s seen his fair share of success. But nothing could top what the Cougars did during the 2012-13 season.

  • Male athlete of the year

Jake Bender sums up his success on the ski slopes in simple terms.

  • Female athlete of the year

Lexie Malazdrewicz has won multiple state swimming titles. And now she has repeated in another honor.

  • June’s wildflowers let us all...

One of the most beautiful flowers in June is golden banner. It is in full bloom in my yard, but it starts blooming as early as April and May on the high plains. There are large yellow patches of golden banner now blooming throughout the foothills.

Soon it will march even higher with its yellow banners sparkling until it is blooming at Echo Lake in July and occasionally a bit higher above timberline in August.
