  • EHS knocks on the door, but can’...

DENVER — It was a recurring theme for the Evergreen Lady Cougars. In a Region 1 girls tennis tournament that featured the likes of host Colorado Academy, Valor Christian and Alexander Dawson, Evergreen was knocking on the door time and again to qualify someone for this week’s 4A state tournament in Pueblo. But it didn’t quite happen.

  • Evergreen puts on a hitting...

The Evergreen Cougars put on a hitting clinic May 4 against rival Conifer. And every time the Lobos answered, Evergreen answered right back.
The home-standing Cougars scored four runs or more in four consecutive innings, capping the game with a Joe Danni game-ending RBI single in the fifth inning for a 17-7 win. And it’s wasn’t just one individual — it was a collective effort for the Cougars, as all nine guys contributed in some form or another.

LAKEWOOD — Sometimes the baseball can look like a beach ball to a hitter on fire. Sometimes the strike zone can look smaller than a golf ball to a struggling pitcher.
Evergreen’s baseball team knocked off Conifer 18-3 on April 25 at Keli McGregor Field at All-Star Park. The Lobos issued 14 walks among seven pitchers, including eight walks in the first inning. It was 7-0 before Conifer took its first swing.

  • Lady Cougars stay on task,...

The first half was a free-flowing offensive showcase, with both host Evergreen and Conifer pelting shots on goal from long distance.
The second half was all about the Lady Cougars staying focused on the task at hand. That task was not only staying unbeaten in the 4A Jeffco League, but doing something they haven’t done in three years — and that’s beat Conifer.

GOLDEN — It hasn’t been the greatest of seasons for the Evergreen girls golf team. But for that matter, it hasn’t been all that great for the rest of the state either.

  • Winter’s return plays havoc with...

The grass is green, flowers are blooming and the birds are chirping. Those are typically signs of spring. But not here. Not this year.
Old Man Winter’s unwelcome return in recent weeks has played havoc with the high school sports schedule. Events have either been outright canceled or postponed multiple times. It’s causing a logistical nightmare for athletic directors to reschedule events for later in the season.

  • Petrik, Lady Cougars beat the...

LAKEWOOD — Whether Kylee Petrik has a clock in her head or not can be debated. Literally, we know that she doesn’t, but figuratively, it certainly seems possible.

Two seniors made their college choices official last week during signing ceremonies at Evergreen High School.
Sam Hamilton signed with the University of Denver to play soccer and Colin Elmgreen will take his talents to Nebraska Wesleyan University to play basketball.

  • Underdog Lobos don’t wilt under...

CONIFER — Conifer boys lacrosse head coach Tyler Knauer has been waiting a long time to taking a win from Evergreen. He doesn’t have to wait any longer.
A Conifer team that had lost seven straight and never beaten Evergreen came out with nothing to lose April 12 at Lobo Field. Behind the scoring of Connor Rankin and Blake Bannon, who combined for seven goals, Conifer posted a 12-7 win over rival Evergreen. It was as sweet a victory as a team could have, considering the Lobos are just 2-8 this season.

  • Evergreen continues work on...

LAKEWOOD — A look at the results might suggest a different story, but Evergreen track and field coach Scott Haebe knows better.
The Cougars weren’t likely to be high on the leaderboard at the two-day Pomona Invitational, but Haebe knows that, considering the competition, his team was getting to where it needs to be.
