  • Cougars back on track

Connor Williams definitely noticed a change in how the Evergreen High wrestling team ran practice a year ago. Different than what he was used to when his father — Lane Williams — was the head coach. But it wasn’t such a big difference in his view.

  • Lobos have high hopes

Jack Prentner, despite going 0-2, looks back at last year’s 4A state tournament debut as a positive experience.

“It was breathtaking at the Pepsi Center. It was really unbelievable. I went two and out, but I still had a great experience,” Prentner said. “I know how hard I have to work. I know what it takes. I also know what I need to improve on.”

  • Huskies’ numbers are down, but...

Ryley McMahen was winning his semifinal match at regionals last year against Clear Creek’s Matthew McNeil. He was waiting for McNeil to attempt a throw, one that McMahen was resisting, so that the Platte Canyon grappler could turn the tables on his Frontier League foe. Then it happened.

McMahen’s leg snapped. His ACL was torn, ending his season and any hope of joining his four Platte Canyon teammates at last season’s 3A state wrestling tournament.

  • Miscues, Meeker’s air attack...

BAILEY — There was no sugar-coating it. It was painful, even if Platte Canyon may have had no business being as close as it was.

That’s because the ninth-seeded Huskies, the home underdogs playing host to top-seeded Meeker in the quarterfinals of the 1A state football playoffs on Nov. 12, were actually in the game.

  • Evergreen swimmers ready to head...

Since they were 7 years old, Kate McDonald, Katelyn Kenchel and Kara Coughlin have been swimming together. They’ve been part of a journey together. College will take them in a different direction, but one more time they were brought together to embrace their future.

  • Palisade lays down the hammer,...

Austin Bernal and Tanner Pratt rushed for two touchdowns each as third-seeded Palisade rolled to a 44-3 rout of visiting Evergreen in the first round of the 3A state football playoffs on Nov. 11 at Stoker Stadium in Grand Junction.

The host Bulldogs built a 35-3 lead through three quarters and forced a running clock in the fourth. All together, Bernal scored three times.
