Evergreen puts on a hitting...

The Evergreen Cougars put on a hitting clinic May 4 against rival Conifer. And every time the Lobos answered, Evergreen answered right back.
The home-standing Cougars scored four runs or more in four consecutive innings, capping the game with a Joe Danni game-ending RBI single in the fifth inning for a 17-7 win. And it’s wasn’t just one individual — it was a collective effort for the Cougars, as all nine guys contributed in some form or another.

DENVER — It was a recurring theme for the Evergreen Lady Cougars. In a Region 1 girls tennis tournament that featured the likes of host Colorado Academy, Valor Christian and Alexander Dawson, Evergreen was knocking on the door time and again to qualify someone for this week’s 4A state tournament in Pueblo. But it didn’t quite happen.

Boating season opens at...

Boating season is officially open at Evergreen Lake for those who enjoy paddling, sailing and drifting across smooth waters in a mountain setting.

 

From now until May 30, boat rentals are available at the lake on weekends. Beginning May 31, the lake will be open daily for boating through Aug. 18, weather permitting. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Veterans in need of assistance will have an opportunity to learn about services they can access at the third annual Veterans’ Rendezvous in Conifer on Saturday.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Denver regional office and other state, county and local service and health-care providers will once again offer consultation, information and opportunities for veterans, who can sign up on the spot for VA benefits and services.

Youngsters who enter an Evergreen Rodeo Parade essay contest will have a chance to be selected as a grand marshal for this year’s event, with the theme Under the Rodeo Big Top.

Six children ages 5 to 12 will be chosen from contestants’ essays on “Why I would like to be a parade grand marshal in the Evergreen Rodeo Parade.”

Bounce doesn’t go EHS’ way

LAKEWOOD — No, Evergreen didn’t win the 4A Jeffco League girls soccer championship on May 3 at Lakewood Memorial Field. That honor was bestowed on preseason favorite Green Mountain, thanks to a Jenn Brunsdon rebounded goal in the 68th minute for a 1-0 victory.
But while Evergreen was denied a league title, it may have gained something even more important — the confidence to play the state’s best with the 4A playoffs on the horizon.

Blue Spruce Habitat dedicates...

On a high road in Brook Forest is a gray frame house with purple trim where Evergreen resident Elizabeth Gonzales now lives.

 

Gonzales’ new home is the 30th one built by Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity.

“Two years ago, I first saw this land. Now it’s going to be Elizabeth’s home,” said Kathleen O’Leary, executive director of the area organization.

O’Leary was among Blue Spruce Habitat staff and volunteers who came to the dedication of Gonzales’ home on Friday afternoon.

Sound decisions on memorial,...

It’s been a pretty good couple of weeks for decisions by and about Evergreen’s primary governmental entities. The ill-advised attempt to recall the board of directors of the Evergreen Fire Protection District was snuffed out by a landslide vote, and the Evergreen Park and Recreation District board kept the faith with the American Legion and other supporters of the Buchanan Park veterans memorial by approving a statue to complete the memorial.

Evergreen boys, girls rule...

LAKEWOOD — Evergreen High School won both the girls and boys 4A Jeffco League track and field championships on May 12 at Jefferson County Stadium.
The girls won with a league-best 222 points, topping D’Evelyn for the 4A honors. The Lady Jaguars finished with 199 points. Lakewood was the top 5A school with 175.5.
The EHS boys scored 193 points, just topping 5A Chatfield, which finished with 188.5. D’Evelyn was second among 4A schools with 159.

Conifer High has a new principal

Conifer High School’s new principal has 21 years of education experience and is leaving his position at Northridge High School in Greeley to come to CHS.

Jeffco schools announced to parents on Friday that Wesley Paxton will succeed Mike Musick as the school’s principal in the 2013-14 school year. Musick has taken a position at the district level in the new School Innovation and Effectiveness Division.
