Evergreen fire department developing 10-year plan

Issues raised during the failed recall election resurfaced at the May 14 meeting of the Evergreen Fire Protection District board. 

During the public comment portion of the meeting, former recall candidate Paul Peil asked for clarification on the material that would be burned at the fire training facility under construction. The facility was a catalyst for the recall effort that began last fall and ended with the defeat of four challengers in the April 23 election.

Lane jumps onto podium for EHS

LAKEWOOD — The last time Andre Lane competed in the triple jump was two years ago and he doesn’t remember much about that trip. For the record, he finished 16th in 2011.
Fast forward to 2013 and the Evergreen senior was back representing the Cougars’ boys team in all four events they qualified for at the 4A state track and field championships, including the triple jump. But he wasn’t feeling all that confident about his chances of success after the preliminary round.

Elli Rouse wanted to look scary.
The 11 year-old had two big streaks of eye black perfectly applied on each side of her nose. The problem? Both were accompanied by a douse of purple and red glitter on top.
Rouse and a string of other young and well-spoken volunteers, all affiliated with the Stingers Soccer Club, helped pull off the fourth annual Pam’s Jam, a round-robin soccer jamboree, at Marshdale Elementary School on May 18.

Evergreen basketball camps scheduled for first week of June

Evergreen High School’s summer boys and girls basketball camp is scheduled for June 3-7 at EHS.
The boys camp runs June 3-7 with sessions for incoming 3rd-5th graders running 9-11 a.m., daily and for incoming 6th-8th graders running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Cost is $70 and is payable to the EHS boys basketball booster club.

Bird sightings enhance a simple outdoor chore

The old adage “Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it,” came to mind today when the spring weather I have been wishing for came with some gusty winds with temperatures in the 80s. That’s not spring; it’s even warmer than most of our summer weather. I was out cleaning up the yard a bit and sweeping the patio, and I thought I would melt in the process.

Tallying the 2013 legislative scorecard

The Colorado legislature adjourned May 8 after completing the work of the first session of the 69th General Assembly. Highly contentious issues and partisan wrangling characterized the session. Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and the governor’s office after a two-year period in which control of the legislature was split, as Republicans controlled the House in 2011 and 2012 by a narrow 33-32 margin.

Fellow Brownie inspires troop’s sweet gesture

Sometimes Evergreen’s hometown heroes aren’t necessarily in Evergreen.

For Brownie Girl Scout Troop 3110, this year’s hometown heroes were at Children’s Hospital. The Bergen Valley third-grade girls recently honored the doctors and nurses in the hospital’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders who have been taking care of troop member Kaymen Story.
