StageDoor’s ‘Sweet Charity’ is full of love, laughs

We’ve all met the girl who wants something so badly that she tries too hard to get it. That’s Charity Hope Valentine, the girl who wants to be loved so much that she has lost sight of who she is. Charity sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through “Sweet Charity,” the latest production by StageDoor Theatre’s high school company.

Cougars seal playoff ticket

WESTMINSTER — It was the kind of atmosphere that Evergreen head boys basketball coach Scott Haebe said that his team can learn to respond from. It was a playoff-like atmosphere Feb. 20 at Standley Lake.

And maybe it was a playoff game for the Cougars. Finishing no higher than third in their division of the 4A Jeffco League, which included the conference’s top two teams — Golden and Valor Christian — every win down the stretch was much-needed.

It took a while — 4 minutes, 33 seconds to be exact — before either Evergreen or Conifer scored in their Feb. 10 girls basketball encounter at Evergreen High School, but once the scoring began, there was no stopping junior Sam Kisiel.

GOLDEN — Timing is everything. It’s a lesson Lane Hanson learned the hard way in his final two seasons wrestling for Evergreen High School.

Both years he beat an opponent during the regular season but lost when it counted the most. 

No matter how you spell it, it’s still a bluebird

I don’t know how to write this article about bluebirds, blue birds, Blue birds or Blue Birds found in this area. All four spellings plus a hyphenated form are found in various bird books. I, myself, prefer the single word of bluebird.

Friends returning last week from Santa Fe told me they had seen bluebirds eating juniper just south of the state line in New Mexico. My friends thought the birds were on their way back for the summer. They well may have been.

Evergreen couple open shooting range in Lakewood

Bristlecone Shooting, Training and Retail Center in Lakewood has been very busy since it opened.

Owners Bryan and Jacquelyn Clark of Evergreen expected it to be that way. The couple moved to Evergreen from Atlanta recently and started looking for a nearby shooting range they could join. When they found that the Clear Creek Sportsman Club in Dumont has an estimated two-year wait, and the Boulder Rifle Club has an estimated seven-year wait (according to group websites), they realized there was a market for a new range.

Coffman deserves respect for service

Mike Coffman, Colorado’s congressman from the 6th District, can be a bulldog.

Once he latches onto something, he tends to hang on for dear life until the point he wants to make is clear or the issue he’s pursuing has come to some kind of resolution.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’ delivers some big laughs

Hungry alien plants on a quest for world domination aren’t usually what come to mind when one thinks of a sentimental love story. In the case of “Little Shop of Horrors,” alien plants, skid-row orphans and maniacal dentists are exactly the right recipe for unlikely love. The Evergreen Chorale’s production of this madcap musical proves that love can be found in the most unlikely places even with a lounge-chair-size monster plant hanging over your shoulder.

Storksbill blooms may be seen in February near the foothills

Once more, a fine snow is drifting down on the meadows that surround me. Elk Run Assisted Living is located in an offshoot of the Elk Meadow Open Space area.

I watched the fog move across the meadow and as usual this time of year, it brought another snowstorm with it. The grasses in the meadow are dry, tan or yellow, with nary a sign of spring green.
