Group seeking ways to convert love of Evergreen into local spending

“I think we would all agree that people who live in Evergreen love it,” said Steve Sumner, director of the Center for the Arts Evergreen. “How do we get them into the shops?”

 

Gathered around a table at the arts center last Wednesday, Sumner and others in a focus group were immersed in a discussion on ways to promote Evergreen to its residents.

Lane jumps onto podium for EHS

LAKEWOOD — The last time Andre Lane competed in the triple jump was two years ago and he doesn’t remember much about that trip. For the record, he finished 16th in 2011.
Fast forward to 2013 and the Evergreen senior was back representing the Cougars’ boys team in all four events they qualified for at the 4A state track and field championships, including the triple jump. But he wasn’t feeling all that confident about his chances of success after the preliminary round.

Evergreen basketball camps scheduled for first week of June

Evergreen High School’s summer boys and girls basketball camp is scheduled for June 3-7 at EHS.
The boys camp runs June 3-7 with sessions for incoming 3rd-5th graders running 9-11 a.m., daily and for incoming 6th-8th graders running from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Cost is $70 and is payable to the EHS boys basketball booster club.

Natural fence designed to keep snow from blowing onto highway

Shovels in hand, Tony Auciello and other Jefferson County Open Space staff were planting evergreen saplings and seedlings in the expansive meadow bordering Highway 74 in Evergreen last Thursday.

Dodging rain and sleet showers, they worked steadily in the gray morning chill to complete the project designed to help motorists driving in winter conditions.

When they mature in a few years, the trees will provide a living fence to protect Evergreen Parkway from snow and ice that strong winter winds deposit on the road.

Essay contest gives kids a chance to be marshals in Rodeo Parade

Youngsters who enter an Evergreen Rodeo Parade essay contest will have a chance to be selected as a grand marshal for this year’s event, with the theme Under the Rodeo Big Top.

Six children ages 5 to 12 will be chosen from contestants’ essays on “Why I would like to be a parade grand marshal in the Evergreen Rodeo Parade.”

Spring’s arrival brings new growth to aspen, alder trees

It is so nice to have some warm spring days, and now we are promised summer temperatures this week. Just to go out in my yard and see green fields and robins looking for worms, and hear green-tailed towhees and house wrens singing is a tonic for my winter-shriveled soul.

Relays embrace chance to run

LAKEWOOD — Sammy Skold will have plenty of memories to cherish now that her athletic career at Evergreen High School is over. That includes this year’s 4A state track and field championships.
The end results may not stack up with those from years past, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be memorable.
“Oh man, it’s been a long four years — definitely four years I’m going to miss,” Skold said.

Tallying the 2013 legislative scorecard

The Colorado legislature adjourned May 8 after completing the work of the first session of the 69th General Assembly. Highly contentious issues and partisan wrangling characterized the session. Democrats controlled the House, the Senate and the governor’s office after a two-year period in which control of the legislature was split, as Republicans controlled the House in 2011 and 2012 by a narrow 33-32 margin.
