Today's Opinions

  • Transportation proposal a good first step

Not quite halfway through the 2017 session of the Colorado General Assembly, House Speaker Crisanta Duran and Senate President Kevin Grantham, in conjunction with the Transportation Committee chairs -- Representative Diane Mitsch-Bush and Senator Randy Baumgardner -- have introduced the highest priority bill of the legislative session. Their proposal refers to a transportation plan that will, if voters approve it in November, make $3.5 billion available for transportation projects across Colorado over the next 20 years.

    Trump’s ‘opinions’ are misinformed
    Editor:
Jim Akin had an interesting take in his letter titled “Citizen Trump is nearly expressing his opinion.” I congratulate him for his creativity in coming up with a new term to compete with lies and alternative facts to describe Trump’s questionable utterances.

  • A final word in a career of words: goodbye

“And if I’d have known then, what I know now

“I’d never let you disappear into the crowd

“Or turn away the way I did

    “With so much left unsaid

“If I … if I’d have known it was the last time.”

    — Lee Ann Womack

What a long, strange trip it’s been.

  • A final goodbye to an audience of one

Editor’s note: For my penultimate column as editor of these newspapers, I could think of nothing more appropriate than a piece I wrote in the mid-’90s for the Boulder Daily Camera in honor of my father. Tuesday would have been Isaac Bell’s 97th birthday. That long-ago column appears below, thanks to permission from the Camera and its executive editor, my old buddy Kevin Kaufman.

  • Appreciation for a wave of patriotism

I’ve seen a man standing on the Genessee bridge over I-70 waving an American flag during morning rush hour several times over the last couple of months. At first I assumed he was a Donald Trump supporter celebrating the election of our new president. Other days, I wondered if he was expressing support for our country in response to concerns about things the new president had done. It then occurred to me that his display of patriotism could be driven by general support of our country, having nothing to do with current events.

  • T-wreck: a legacy from politicians past

“Solid stone is just sand and water, baby.

Sand and water, and a million years gone by.”

HIGH ABOVE THE STEGOSAURUS LOT — On a chilly and snowy Sunday, no birds of prey are visible from the raptor observation area along the trail, and no hikers or bikers pass by. To the south, clouds close in on the Rooney Valley, and throughout the gray landscape a sense of foreboding looms.
