  • Vote yes on tax increase for Jeffco library

The last time the Jeffco Public Library saw a tax increase, the Internet was still a gleam in Al Gore’s eye. Nor had DVDs been invented. E-books? Forget it. “Portable” computers that didn’t result in a hernia? Surely you jest.

In fact, the last time our library saw a boost in taxpayer support was some 29 years ago, and since then in Jefferson County, demand for services that the library offers has exploded:

    • The county’s population has grown by 130,000 people.

Shooting bear cubs in residential area was not responsible

    Editor:

The man who shot the cubs should know better than to fire his gun in a neighborhood. Now these poor cubs are dead.

I had a bear try to get into my garbage this morning. He was a very big boy. I just shined the flashlight on him and told him to move along, and he did.

This man should know better, living in Evergreen among wildlife, that you have to keep your garbage secure.

People have spoken: Witt, Newkirk and Williams should be recalled

    Editor:

I am an 81-year-old great-grandmother, and I have grandchildren attending Jefferson County schools. I do not like the waste of money that might be going to challenge the recall of the three Board of Education members. More than twice the required signatures were gathered, which shows the voters’ support for the recall.

  • Sanders, Trump are flashes in the pan

Imagine the impact of a Bernie Sanders-versus-Donald Trump presidential election in 2016. Property values in Canada would likely skyrocket with the biggest exodus of Americans to Canada since the end of the draft.

Fourteen months before the next presidential election, the biggest surprise has been the emergence of Sanders and Trump when conventional wisdom suggests that neither has any chance, or business, of becoming president of the United States. Their seeming viability results from completely different circumstances in our two major political parties.

Be an informed voter in recall election

    Editor:

Marion and Jim Dries wrote in a recent letter that folks should seek the truth before voting in the school board recall election. A very good way to do that would be to check out two websites: freedomforeducation.com and jeffcoeducationtruth.com.

  • End the uncertainty at Jeffco Schools

The worst thing about the almost two years of turmoil that we’ve experienced in Jefferson County schools is that it’s been a continuing distraction from the school district’s most important responsibility — to educate the kids who live in this county. Anything that distracts teachers from focusing their energy on giving kids the best possible education is a major flaw that should be resolved as soon as possible.

School board recall is really about control by teachers union

    Editor:

The discussion of the three school board recall petitions in the Times illustrates the stated reasons for the recall but makes no reference to the real reason, which can be stated in a few words: Not controlled by teachers union. This simpler wording on the petitions and ballots might not have impressed the secretary of state or voters, but would have the virtue of honesty.
