    Short-term rentals benefit the area

    Yes, Hank Alderfer makes a great point in his column about the history of Evergreen with short-term rentals.
    Many areas are doing these short-term rentals very successfully: Salida, Durango, Leadville. They are carefully licensed, inspected and managed. They bring up to 8 percent of gross income in those areas. We could use that income to save our libraries and support our community.

The majority of the houses were built as summer vacation homes. Our population mushroomed in the summer. It was a vacation, seasonal community. Short-term rentals were appropriate. Live and let live!     Data don’t support well-test waiver

    Replying to Mr. Cerillo’s letter in the June 22 Canyon Courier: Mr. Cerillo is not neutral, being a consultant paid by the developer/applicant. I was not at the hearing, but I have read the case file, and I agree with the county staff.

    Commission decision on well-test waiver was the correct and fair one

    Re: “Commissioners’ decision at odds with recommendations from planning staff.” This is perhaps the one factual statement in the article. I am guilty of having presented the data in the case in which, thank goodness for Commissioner Rosier, who is an engineer and understands science and logic, was able to rule correctly.

    10th Mountain event was inspiring

    Facing the uncertainty of how a new event might go over in Evergreen, Western Business Forum president Russ Campbell organized an event at the Evergreen Lake House on Wednesday, June 8. The evening event was a presentation of 10th Mountain Division history and involvement, and presenters included three generations of 10th Mountain Division trained men.

    Evergreen Country Day School is a hidden gem

    Did you know we have a wonderful, independent school right here in Evergreen?
    I did not until last year. It is hard to imagine such a beautiful school in our own mountain area. It is deserving of more local news coverage. We moved here six years ago with our then-5-year-old son and spoke to many people. No one ever mentioned Evergreen Country Day. Since then, it has moved to a fabulous, inspiring facility behind Home Depot and has grown to 200-plus students.

    Signs at elementary school were informative, helpful

    I’ve been cogitating for a time on the “Post No Signs” directive that has appeared on the West Jeff Elementary School fence. People posted signs about community events and removed them within reasonable time after their events finished. Those signs provided a great community “bulletin board.” The signs, invariably, were well made. Nothing crude or propagandistic was placed.
