It’s time for the penny to buy the farm
    Editor:
If it costs 3 cents to mint a penny, why not do away with the penny?
I mean, after all, does it make sense? Or cents?
Of course, you realize this would mean our costs would go up. For instance, instead of something costing $1.03, now it would cost $1.05. But hey, just think of the possibilities. It could help pay for health care or even help reduce our national debt.

Keep off-leash dogs away from others

    Editor:

As a frequent user of open space around Evergreen (both Jeffco and Denver parcels), I see a lot of folks with their dogs off leash. Others can debate the propriety, but all I ask is that these off-leash dogs don’t bother other people and/or their dogs.

A word of thanks to veterans

    Editor:

The average citizen today, myself included, does not comprehend what our country’s veterans have endured. I feel the importance to help the public become more mindful of these incredible people.

A sincere thank-you to the hundreds of sponsors, volunteers and participants in the 2013 Mountain Resource Center Empty Bowls fund-raiser. Once again, the event was a resounding success and will help us accomplish our goal of neighbors helping neighbors.

Lamontagne would bring spirit of collaboration to school board
    Editor:
I am relieved to see Jeff Lamontagne on the ballot for the Jeffco school board. With the federal government shutdown and the recent recall elections in Colorado, I am happy to see a Jeffco school board election coming next month. As with all elections, we as voters should be thoughtful of our candidates before the election and not two years into their term.

Government shutdown didn’t stop me from seeing the national parks
    Editor:
I was depressed that I could not go to Rocky Mountain National Park to see the colors change today. Instead, I headed down the hill to Denver and saw a great gallery show at David Cook Galleries featuring America’s national parks.

Killing elk with arrow on golf course was inhumane, unnecessary
    Editor:
While the human population can apparently shove its way around the planet with impunity for any purpose, including golfing, elk that dare to tread on the golf course are not allowed to conduct their lives without threat of being shot.
