  • In defense of Ted Cruz and the Tea Party

Last week, Ted Cruz won the Republican U.S. Senate primary in Texas over a better-known, better-funded opponent. If you’ve followed the race, the narrative from the press has essentially been that Cruz is a Tea Party-backed firebrand whose knee-jerk ideology presages a rightward lurch for the GOP.

  • Fresh faces headed for legislature

Combine term limits and redistricting, and you get the biggest infusion of fresh faces anyone can remember when the Colorado General Assembly convenes next January.

  • Colorado should head off trouble at the pass

There are 110 seats in the Michigan House of Representatives. Penises occupy 83 of them. Vaginas are sadly underrepresented, and indeed two of them were recently prohibited from speaking out on, of all topics, women’s reproductive rights.

  • An assault on citizens’ safety

In the somber wake of last week’s mass shooting at an Aurora movie theater, Coloradans are looking for answers.

  • A reminder that all life is precious

Obviously, words cannot heal or explain the terrible events of last week. But I think President Obama made some decent and heartfelt remarks on the matter. Here’s what he said:

  • Public should be able to trust trustees

If you can’t trust a public trustee with the public’s trust, whom can you trust?

  • Politics, and poor judgment, on parade

I’ve walked in the Evergreen Rodeo Parade on many occasions, and it’s always a highlight of my summer. My job often involves attempting to keep sweet rewards out of the hands of politicians — so a morning spent depositing candy into the hands of cute kids provides a welcome break.

  • Enough Americans still believe in America

Seems like there’s plenty to lose sleep over these days. We’re into the fourth year of the worst recession since the Great Depression. In Afghanistan, we’re a decade into an “operation” nobody seems to understand. Long-term fiscal obligations mount apace, pushing dangerously against the limits of mathematical sustainability.

  • From crises come opportunities

All indications continue to suggest that Colorado is emerging from the recession ahead of the rest of the country. In just one day last week, the state’s economists reported that revenue estimates were almost a quarter of a billion dollars ahead of earlier projections; it was revealed that our share of national tourism spending had gone up for the first time in 20 years; and the value of oil produced in Colorado charged past natural gas revenues.

  • Training building will benefit volunteers

    By Mike Weege
Evergreen Fire/Rescue has been planning to build a training facility for years. Research of building types and locations began in 2010, resulting in a proposal presented to the fire district board early in 2012.
I encourage community members to base their opinions on accurate information. In our current political environment, both locally and nationally, accurate information can be difficult to come by. Please do your own research, gather the facts and listen to both sides of the conversation before forming an opinion.
