  • Seceding from rational thought

Just think of the opportunities secession will give to Coloradans from all walks of life. Once we rid ourselves of that evil scourge that’s haunted us since we became a state a tortuous 136 years ago, we can move on and meet our true destiny.

  • From an apocalypse to a renaissance?

You won’t be needing to tell President Obama to move to the center. The president won because he is the center. The election sounded an alarm that conjoined various coalitions supporting a more liberal agenda around gay marriage, immigration reform, health care for all, minority rights and women’s rights.

  • It’s OK to wish me a merry Christmas

In early July this year, someone — with the kindest of intentions — wished me a “happy holiday.” I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but upon reflection I wondered what holiday, other that the Fourth of July, could he have possibly meant?

  • From insurrection, love for a new country

“But the glory of the Present is to make the Future free —
We love our land for what she is and what she is to be”
    — from “America For Me,” by Henry Van Dyke

Poetry creates insurrection. When I created an assignment using poetry to teach grammar and communication, my ESL students marched off to the dean’s office to complain.

We all breathed a sigh of relief when the Westminster Police Department announced it had Jessica Ridgeway’s suspected killer in custody. But in the days following his capture, we are learning the extent to which this result was made possible by great police work.

  • Ballot items: some good, some bad

For as long as I can remember, the Colorado state personnel system has been characterized as being overly bureaucratic and restrictive. This year, we have a chance to do something about it.
Based upon Tammany Hall-type scandals involving government employees around the country in the last half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, governments across the United States enacted merit-based personnel systems that made it all but impossible for politicians to reward their political allies with government jobs as rewards for their loyalties.

  • 3A/3B critical to providing Jeffco kids the best education

    By Pam Linquist
In November, Jefferson County voters have very important decisions to make. The outcome on ballot measures 3A and 3B will affect Jefferson County Public Schools forever, because if they fail, we all lose.
Both sides have valid points regarding Jeffco’s education, but one side doesn’t solve our immediate need today.

  • Really: This is a critical election

Every four years we hear it, but this time it just might be true: This could be the most important election in a generation.

  • If it is broke, then by all means, please fix it

  • Amendment 64 is wrong for Colorado

    By Sheriff Ted Mink

There are reasons the governor, attorney general, state representatives and senators, CU regents and more than 100 other elected leaders in Colorado are opposed to Constitutional Amendment 64. There are reasons why over more than education, medical, youth, law enforcement, treatment, chambers of commerce and business organizations are opposing Amendment 64.
