  • Hopefuls draw lines in the sand

  • Reconciliation key to big solutions

In a recent radio interview, former secretary of state Henry Kissinger made an interesting point about how polarized our politics have become. I’m paraphrasing here, but Kissinger’s idea is essentially that positive changes in society are achieved only through moments of reconciliation, not conflict. It seems clear he views the partisan environment as a major obstacle to the continued success of America.
So how can we get to a point of reconciliation? And are we so polarized that reconciliation is no longer possible?

  • EFR should rethink training building

    By Greg Dobbs
If ever, heaven forbid, I need Evergreen Fire/Rescue to stabilize my broken back or to save my burning house, I’ll want them to race to help me as fast as they can. Which is why it seems strange to say, lately, our fire district has been moving too fast.

  • Wisconsin’s lasting political lessons

I wouldn’t have voted for Scott Walker for governor had I lived in Wisconsin in 2010. If I’d been asked to rate his performance over his first year and a half in office, I would have given him very low marks, as I thought his agenda to strip a variety of rights from government employees and make them scapegoats for all the state’s ills was inappropriate and overly divisive. Having said those things, I would not have voted to recall Walker in Wisconsin’s recent election either.

  • Ninety percent of life is just showing up

Woody Allen is credited with one of my dad’s favorite sayings: “Ninety percent of life is just showing up.”  Whether Allen actually coined the line (a rigorous Google search was inconclusive), I find it truer with each passing year.

  • Really? These are our choices?

Did you hear about Romney Hood?  He steals from the poor and gives to the rich. The response: That’s “Obamaloney.” And this is how we choose the leader of the free world?

  • Time to pick out the perfect Christmas tree

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and winter will soon begin to settle in. It is not bitter cold today but colder than forecast. This is no doubt due to a high overcast, which appears to be much thicker than expected.

  • Ugly turkey vultures are summer residents in the foothills

One of the strangest big birds you can see in this area is the turkey vulture. They are rather ugly-looking birds when you see them up close as they squabble over a road kill.

Not one but two dog parks
    Editor:
Could someone tell me why my tax money was spent to construct, improve and enlarge a beautiful dog park where these canines have an exceptional place to run and play off-leash, when all the while Elk Meadow Park (supposedly for leashed dogs only) is serving the same purpose with dogs running amok?
