  • A day of tri-ing for a good cause

    Buchanan Rec Center was inundated with close to 200 kids participating in the eighth annual Evergreen Kids Triathlon on Sunday.

    They biked, ran and swam their way to fitness, all while raising money for the Evergreen Park & Recreation District’s Special Needs Program. This year, the event raised $4,725 from registration fees.

    Families come from around the metro area to participate in the event, which is low-key because no one keeps track of times, and all of the kids are encouraged to participate.

  • Elk Creek’s red carpet gives students superhero treatment

    People should have the chance to walk a red carpet at least once in their lives, and on Thursday, every student at Elk Creek Elementary in Conifer strutted their way along a red carpet after celebrating the start of the new school year.

    Kicking off at 9 a.m., Elk Creek’s first-day-of-school festivities were one part welcome for the Class of 2030 — incoming kindergartners — and one part celebration of a year principal Ryan Lucas hopes will encourage everyone to embrace their inner strengths.

  • Fund-raiser for IMHS to feature hoedown, festivities

    The Intermountain Humane Society’s annual Cause for Paws fund-raiser will be a little different this year as the event moves from an afternoon gathering to an evening, Old West-themed affair.

    Taking place Saturday in Pine, the 2017 Cause for Paws will feature a hoedown in a working barn, music from the Rowdy Country Combo, carnival games, and libations that include local craft beer from Mad Jack’s Mountain Brewery in Bailey. Scooter’s Smokehouse BBQ will also cater the event with a special buffet for kids.

  • Decision delayed in woman’s bid to overturn 2010 conviction

    A decision has been delayed in a former Evergreen woman’s bid to have her 2010 conviction for criminal impersonation overturned due to ineffective counsel and thus, stymie U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts to deport her back to Peru.

  • Evergreen Fire to join state cancer trust for firefighters

    The Evergreen Fire Protection District board voted Aug. 8 to join the Colorado Firefighter Heart and Cancer Benefits Trust, which assists with covering the costs of treatment for work-related cardiac incidents and cancer for career, part-time and volunteer firefighters.

  • Former Jeffco custodian sentenced in sexting case

    The former Jeffco Public Schools custodian arrested last September on suspicion of sending nude photos to a female student was sentenced last week to four years of sex offender intensive probation.

    Jacob David Deal pleaded guilty Aug. 14 to one charge of attempted sexual assault on a child, a Class 5 felony, in connection to incidents involving two students last year.

  • Trump chatter dictates town hall

    Congressman Jared Polis’ town hall Sunday afternoon was supposed to be an opportunity for Conifer residents to voice comments and concerns about what the Boulder Democrat should do during the last year and a half of his current term as the U.S. Representative for Colorado’s 2nd congressional district.

    However, most of the concerns expressed had less to do with Polis’ key initiatives — infrastructure, health care and tax reform — and more to do with President Donald J. Trump.

  • ‘Bite out of the sun’: Mount Evans draws spectators Monday morning to get a glimpse of the solar eclipse

    As the moon began its slow journey over the sun, murmurs of excitement echoed across Mount Evans.

    “It looks like somebody took a bite out of the sun,” said David Pierce, 8, from his perch atop a rock.

    David and his family traveled to Mount Evans from Denver to watch Monday’s solar eclipse and held signs reading “eclipse or bust.”

    “We’re here looking for the lizard man,” said Marty, another member of the Pierce family.

  • Change coming for Indian Hills Water District

    Tension continues in the Indian Hills Water District, but board and community members are making efforts to work together.

    After a period of conflict, the district hopes to reinstate stability and focus on its job of providing clean water to residents of Indian Hills. The upcoming months will bring a new board member to the water district, as well as a set of bylaws and a decision on permanent legal counsel.

  • New faces on campus

    Jeff Lubansky is no stranger to small towns. In fact, the new principal of Deer Creek Elementary in Bailey loves them so much that is why he jumped at the opportunity to take a job with the Platte Canyon school district.

    “What really drew me to Platte Canyon was the programs that they offer here — STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), in particular,” Lubansky said. “I also grew up in a small town and wanted to get back to a smaller area.”
