  • Bleachers clothing store hits the showers; economy deals fatal blow

For the last few weeks, customers have been walking into Bleachers Casual Clothing in Bergen Park with tears in their eyes.

It’s tough to say goodbye to a store that has been in business in virtually the same location for 16 years and where all the customers are like family members.

  • Opposition to Buchanan Park plan dominates meeting

The Evergreen Park and Recreation District board spent about three hours Feb. 24 listening to audience criticism of its Feb. 10 decision to go forward with a feasibility study for a combined community center/arts center in Buchanan Park.

The park board is divided on whether to do a community center feasibility study before conducting a community-wide needs survey and voted 3-2 for the feasibility study to go forward. Both are in the budget for this year.

If you are out of town and your house is threatened by a wildfire, how would you know? Until now, you probably wouldn’t.

After a three-year hiatus, construction could begin this year on another portion of the hard-surface NEAT trail in the Bergen Parkway area, made possible by a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado and Colorado State Trails.

“This project will give us one complete segment of trail from Evergreen Middle School to Broadmoor Drive, and that feels great,” said Liz Cohen, president of the North Evergreen Activity Trail group, which has led the trail construction project for five years.

  • Evergreen routs Delta

Every sports team knows, you never want to get caught looking ahead.

That was the danger for Evergreen its Class 4A boys basketball state tournament opening round game Feb. 25 against visiting Delta.

With the Panthers coming into the game as a 12th-seeded team and with a losing record in the Western Slope League, it would have been very easy for the Cougars to overlook them with an eye toward a potential match-up with the Thomas Jefferson Spartans on Feb. 28.

It would have been easy to do, but that’s not what the No. 5 Cougars did.
