  • Solitaires stay around and stake out territories all winter

The first Townsend’s solitaire that I ever saw was shortly after we moved to Colorado in April 1965. I was looking around our new yard and saw a strange gray bird just across the road, clinging to a giant mullein stalk in the open valley above Little Cub Creek. I watched it digging insects out of the dead mullein stalk and thought how often I had seen downy woodpeckers acting in the same manner.

It may have seemed chaotic, but the dress rehearsal for the second annual Mr. EHS competition was a precursor to the event on Friday night that had all the pageantry and antics that 14 senior boys could dream up.

They participated in talent and swimsuit competitions, plus they answered questions — all to impress the judges, and to have a lot of fun and to raise money for the Evergreen High School Football Boosters and the poms.

Evergreen is likely to lose a couple of minimally used regional bus trips and one hour of Call-n-Ride service daily, as part of an effort to cut $10.7 million in expenses from RTD’s 2012 bus system budget.

The RTD board is scheduled to vote on the suggested list of cutbacks, which affect the whole RTD system, on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Evergreen Public Library will reopen on Mondays under the proposed 2012 budget, but the hours of operation will be cut as part of a system-wide cost-cutting effort to shave $2 million off operating expenses.

The mixed forecast was disconcerting news to about 50 people who showed up at the Evergreen Public Library on the evening of Oct. 19 for a presentation on the library system's financial condition presented by the library staff and Pam Nissler, interim executive director.
