  • District, Jeffco teachers reach agreement

    Jeffco Public Schools and the Jefferson County Education Association have come to a tentative agreement that guarantees a 2.7 percent pay increase and $1.4 million to help teachers with "workload issues."

    The deal also promises a 0.9 percent increase in the district's contribution to the Public Employees' Retirement Association. An additional 0.5 percent salary increase is promised if the district gets a mill-levy increase passed in November.

    The 2.7 percent cost-of-living increase will begin Sept. 1.

  • Parmalee's all-school play features more than 'bare necessities'

    Three months of extraordinary effort on the part of students and staff at Parmalee Elementary School paid off handsomely with the year-end production of “The Jungle Book,” which was performed May 1 and 2 by the entire student body.

    Music teacher Christine Gaudreau came up with the idea of an all-school play involving 200 students, and fellow educators at the school made it possible by offering so much support, she said.

  • Chief Hosa Lodge looking buff for 2008 wedding boom

    Genesee’s Chief Hosa Lodge is gearing up for a wedding-packed summer after a lawsuit and a two-year hiatus for renovations interrupted the festivities.

    The charming granite wedding pavilion and event center, just east of Evergreen at Interstate 70 Exit 253, reopened in late summer 2006 after being closed for renovations for two years.

    Although Chief Hosa Lodge is in Jefferson County, it is part of the Denver Mountain Parks properties and is managed by the Denver Park and Recreation District. The city purchased the land in 1913.

  • Pine beetle symposium scheduled

    It won’t be long before the flight season for the mountain pine beetle, causing anxiety for mountain area residents worried about the preservation of their trees.

    To that end, the Colorado State Forest Service and the Conifer Area Council are hosting a workshop at Conifer High School on May 12 to provide information about local infestations and to discuss how to mitigate potential impacts.

    Since Juliet Gordon Low started the Girl Scouts in Savannah, Ga., in 1912, girls across the globe have participated in Girl Scouts. They learn life skills, leadership and an appreciation of how important it is to be of service to others.

  • Tennis team taking seven to state

    Evergreen girls tennis coach Radka Lacjak had a good feeling about her three singles players heading into last weekend’s regional tournament.

    When the dust settled, all three had punched a ticket to the Class 4A state tournament in Pueblo and the Cougars had a second-place finish in the team standings.

  • Doyle, Eggers elected to park district board

    Evergreen voters picked Janet Doyle and Peter Eggers to join the five-member board of directors of the Evergreen Park and Recreation District in a regular election Tuesday, May 6.

    In winning the seat, Eggers regained the position he held from 1992 to 2004 before the two-term limit was in place.

    Doyle got the most votes, with 417. Eggers was second with 309, and Richard Whitehill collected 89 votes.

    Richard Wulf, the designated election official, said the turnout was average to maybe a little light for an election that didn’t involve a bond issue.
