  • 'Dry-ice bombs' found in local mailboxes

    Jeffco sheriff’s deputies closed down the area around a house at 28907 Clover Lane near Meadow Drive in Evergreen after a dry-ice bomb detonated Monday morning in a mailbox.

    Officers found two more dry-ice bombs in nearby mailboxes. The sheriff’s office says this type of incident is a prank that usually happens between six to eight times a year. Anyone with information is urged to call the sheriff’s office at 303-271-5612.

     

  • Local woman kidnapped, sexually assaulted

    A housecleaner who lives in an apartment in Kittredge is facing charges of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 44-year-old local woman.

    Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies arrested Joel M. Herrin, 40, at his Kittredge apartment about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29.

    As deputies were approaching the dwelling, the suspect opened the door and surrendered, according to a sheriff’s department news release. The man’s address was listed as 26194 Columbine Trail in Kittredge.

  • Evergreen team wins middle-school robotics contest

    A group of Evergreen eighth-graders and their basement-made robot, Bruce, won first place in the Colorado FIRST Lego League Robotics competition at the University of Colorado at Denver.

    The foursome snagged the prestigious award on Dec. 12 over 52 other teams with the best overall score based on four categories: teamwork, robot design, robot game performance, and a research project on a bike/car safety device.

  • Commissioners reject short-term vacation rentals

    The Jeffco commissioners voted 2-1 Tuesday morning against allowing homeowners to rent their homes to vacationers and visitors on a short-term basis.

    The board quickly dispatched an issue that has been a hot subject at numerous meetings since September when the planning department first proposed the idea of changing the zoning regulations.

    Unlike the county commissioners, the planning commission voted 5-2 in favor of allowing short-term rentals, with conditions, at a meeting Dec. 9.

  • Small change could prove big for Cougar football

    It’s kind of fitting that the “Get Back” was the top song the last time Evergreen made the playoffs in football.

    For the record, it was November of 2004, rapper Ludacris was top of the charts and the Cougars had extended their season by one week before getting pasted 47-2 by Niwot.

    Getting back to the playoffs in 2010 might have gotten a little easier thanks to a reshuffled leauge, know for the next two years as the Class 3A Metro South League.

  • Skate the Lake set to go at Evergreen Lake

    The 13th annual Skate the Lake Winter Festival will run from 6 p.m. to midnight on New Year’s Eve, with all proceeds benefiting Drive Smart Evergreen/Conifer.

    In addition to skating Thursday evening on Evergreen Lake, there will be food, dancing, bonfires, sleigh rides and music provided by Straykatz Production. Fireworks displays will start at 8 p.m. and at midnight.

  • Evergreen sweeps tri-meet

    Dan Downs rarely goes down.

    The Evergreen wrestler might give up some points and look as if he’s in a spot of trouble, but he’s not the same wrestler he was this time last year.

    No, Downs thinks things are looking up with a 9-3 record this season..

    “I’m looking to make it to state,” he said. “That’s my goal. Always has been.”

  • Banner for Ice Melt contest swiped from bank

    The banner advertising the Ice Melt Barrel contest was stolen from Evergreen National Bank on Dec. 12 or 13.

    The Ice Melt contest is a benefit for local nonprofit organizations Drive Smart Evergreen-Conifer and the special needs program of the Evergreen Park and Recreation District.
